New Surface Pro Leaks Promise A Boring Update – Forbes

Leaked press images suggest that Microsoft is ready to launch another Surface device in the near future. Following the launch of the Surface Laptop earlier this month a long-overdue successor to the Surface Pro 4 is on its way.

As TechRadar’s Harry Domanski notes, Microsoft has been at pains to stress that there are currently no plans for a Surface Pro 5. But there is some wiggle room….

Microsoft has not only denied a May 23 announcement date for a Surface Pro 5, but denied its existence altogether, which would make sense if it plans to drop the number for the next model in the series.

The leaked images show a design that echoes that of the Surface Pro 4 – the friction-drive kickstand, the proprietary charging port, and the lack of USB-C are all there. Given the critical success of the Surface design the decision to stay with a similar design is a sensible one, although it will leave Microsoft open to the same criticism that Apple is dealing with, specifically that the new Surface Pro is a tired and reworked design.

I don’t think that’s going to worry Microsoft too much as the Surface hardware remit is not just about bringing in retail sales, it’s also about promoting the potential of Windows 10 to its hardware partners and setting up the potential of Microsoft’s cloud services. A new Surface Pro, taking advantage of the latest improvements in hardware and bringing the specifications in line with the recently announced Surface Laptop (and leapfrogging Apple in the process) will be more than enough to keep Microsoft at the table.
