The Match Of The Day host went from Three Lions hero to villain after angry supporters claimed his £1.8million-a-year salary would pay for 68 soldiers or 80 nurses.
Fans claimed they tuned into the weekly football show to see the matches – not Lineker.
Others pledged to boycott Walkers Crisps while he remained the star of the company’s TV adverts.
The backlash came after Lineker was named as the Beeb’s second-biggest earner behind Chris Evans.
“Lineker became the best paid from probably staying with one channel and probably getting better and other people coveting him”

The ex-striker spent around 6,000 minutes on TV screens in 2016.
That included hosting Match Of The Day, the Euro 2016 finals, FA Cup matches and Sports Personality Of The Year, as well as appearances on Have I Got News For You.
It means the former England star raked in around £300 for every minute he spent on screen, or £18,000-an-hour.
Millwall Scott tweeted: “Gary Lineker’s wages are the equivalent to 68 soldiers!’’ EnglandMyEngland messaged: “£1.8 million a year. That’s the equivalent of 80 Nurses.”
BlackAdder4Britain said: “I don’t know a single person who watches Match of the Day because @GaryLineker presents it. You watch it if you like football. End of.’’
Lady Skipster tweeted: “Dear @walkers_crisps. As long as @GaryLineker is your salesman we will never eat them again. Ever!’’ Lineker was staying at a £630-a-night Los Angeles hotel.
It was one of a string of luxury destinations that the TV host has visited over the past year.
His agent Jon Holmes said Lineker “became the best paid from probably staying with one channel and probably getting better and other people coveting him”.
