Anthony Joshua sat down with Oleksandr Usyk’s promotional representatives for a meeting on Thursday in London.
The unified heavyweight world champion held talks alongside his promoter Eddie Hearn (who also co-promotes Usyk), his manager Freddie Cunningham and Usyk’s K2 promoter Alex Krassyuk at the Dorchester Hotel in Mayfair.
After the meeting, AJ did something fairly unusual for him and posted publicly to let the world know the conversations had happened.
Joshua said: “Good to catch up with Eddie Hearn, Alex Krassyuk and 258 Management. Talking all things boxing. #JoshuaVsUsyk”
Krassyuk put: Interesting talks in London with Eddie Hearn, Anthony Joshua.”
While Hearn posted: “More meetings planning 2020.”
Joshua is currently in a difficult situation as, after regaining his WBA, IBF & WBO heavyweight world titles from Andy Ruiz Jr on December 7, he now has two mandatories to deal with.
The IBF have ordered the Brit to defend against Kubrat Pulev, while the WBO want him to face Usyk. Neither sanctioning body is currently willing to budge.
It was expected that AJ would take on Pulev next and Usyk afterwards, though this meeting may indicate that he is willing to jump straight in with the former undisputed cruiserweight king.
However, today’s talks may just have been an attempt to work out a deal that’ll see Usyk agree to let Joshua face Pulev next before meeting him later in the year.
