Kelly Clarkson flown to hospital immediately after hosting awards

Kelly Clarkson has revealed she battled through extreme pain to host the Billboard Music Awards, and had her appendix removed hours later.

The 37-year-old gave no hint she was ill during an energetic medley of some of the year’s biggest songs – and she even performed one of her own tracks during the event in Las Vegas.

Clarkson suggested she “broke down in tears” from pain after the show – and said she was flown to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles as soon as she left the stage.

The Since U Been Gone singer had her appendix removed in a surgery on Thursday morning.

Later that day, Clarkson tweeted: “Not gonna lie…. I may or may not have broken down in tears after the show from pain BUT thanks 2 all the amazing people @ Cedars-Sinai I flew home directly after the event, nailed the surgery early this morning, & feeling awesome now! Bye bye appendix.”

Director Jarrett Wieselman tweeted to say that the star had been suffering from appendicitis “all week” – and praised her “flawless” performance despite her illness.

Clarkson has sold more than 25 million albums around the world since finding fame as the winner of the first series of American Idol in 2002.

She also has won the last two seasons as a coach for The Voice in the US.
