Nets, NBA investigate Kyrie Irving videos as mysterious absences stack up

Jan. 14 (UPI) — The NBA and Brooklyn Nets have began a review into videos, which show Kyrie Irving without a mask while at a party, league and team officials said. The Nets guard hasn’t played since Jan. 5 due to personal reasons.

Videos of the gathering surfaced Monday on social media. Irving can been seen not wearing a mask while in a room with family members and several other people.

“We are aware of a video on social media featuring Kyrie Irving at a family gathering,” Nets general manager Sean Marks said Tuesday.

“We are reviewing the circumstances with both Kyrie and the NBA in order to determine compliance with health and safety protocols.”

If the latest footage is found to be recent, Irving could be fined or suspended for a violation of the NBA’s COVID-19 safety protocol.

Irving’s representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In December, the NBA fined Houston Rockets All-Star James Harden $ 50,000 for a violation of the league’s health and safety protocol after videos surfaced of him at a club.

The NBA’s COVID-19 protocol prohibits indoor social gatherings of 15 or more people and players entering bars, lounges, clubs or similar establishments.

Irving has missed five consecutive games. The Nets have declined to explain why he hasn’t played.

Nets coach Steve Nash said earlier this week that he did not have any updates on Irving and that he did not know if the All-Star guard was taking daily COVID-19 tests. Marks said Irving’s return date was “yet to be finalized.”

Irving missed his first game Jan. 7, one day after Donald Trump supporters rioted and stormed the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Sources told the New York Post, The Association and KRON 4 News last week that Irving’s first absence was related to the events at the Capitol.

Irving, 28, is under contract with the Nets through the 2022-23 season. He has a $ 33.3 million salary this season. The six-time All-Star joined the franchise in free agency before the 2019-2020 campaign.

Irving has averaged 27.1 points, 6.1 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game through seven games this season.

The Nets will host the Orlando Magic on Saturday and Milwaukee Bucks on Monday before a two-game road trip to Cleveland.
