Victory against Leicester City at home with put the Reds seven points clear after a brilliant performance from Rafa Benitez’s men
Manchester City’s hopes of retaining the Premier League title were dealt a huge blow as they were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle United.
Should Liverpool beat Leicester City at home on Wednesday night, the Citizens will slip seven points behind Jurgen Klopp’s men.
City made the perfect start when, with just 25 seconds on the clock, Sergio Aguero found the back of the net with what is officially the quickest goal of the season.
Raheem Sterling played in David Silva with a lofted through ball, but the Spaniard slipped and managed to improvise superbly to head the ball into the path of Aguero to slam home left-footed.
However, the Magpies found an equaliser in the second half when Salomon Rondon managed to steer a lofted ball into the back of the net to send St James Park wild.
And Liverpool fans were soon joining in the celebrations when Newcastle went ahead as Fernandinho’s foul on Sean Longstaff gave Matt Ritchie the chance to score from the spot and, after a long delay as City keeper Ederson received treatment, the winger fired his effort low into the net.
