An international robotics competition in Washington attracted teams of teenagers from more than 150 nations. The team that drew the most attention at the FIRST Global Challenge, which ended Tuesday, was a squad of girls from Afghanistan who were twice rejected for U.S. visas before President Donald Trump intervened. Paleontologists identify extinction event among marine megafauna

June 26 (UPI) -- The disappearance of terrestrial megafauna -- like wooly mammoths and saber tooth tigers -- during the last ice age is well documented. Now, scientists have found evidence that marine megafauna also suffered a previously unknown extinction event.Paleontologists at the University of Zurich analyzed marine fossils dated to the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs, from 5.3 million to 9,700 years BC."We were able to show that around a third of marine megafauna disappeared about three to two million years ago," lead researcher Catalina Pimiento, a scientists with Zurich's Paleontological Institute and Museum, said in a news release. Age, cost of treatment among top reasons patients leave hospital early

MONDAY, June 19, 2017 -- It's a not uncommon occurrence: Patients discharge themselves from the hospital against their doctor's best advice.Now, new research on over 29 million hospital stays sheds light on which types of patients are most prone to this behavior -- and why.Using 2013 U.S. hospital data, researchers found that younger patients are much more likely than older patients to leave the hospital against the advice of their doctor.In fact, patients aged 65 and older were four times less likely to leave the hospital against medical advice than were adults under 65, according to a team led by Dr. Jashvant Poeran, of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.Other factors played a role as well.
