World Series: Nationals beat Astros to force Game 7

Sports
Oct. 29 (UPI) -- The Washington Nationals used a strong outing from Stephen Strasburg and three home runs to beat the Houston Astros 7-2 on Tuesday night at Minute Maid Park to force Game 7 in the 2019 World Series. In this year's postseason, Strasburg has pitched in six games and the Nationals have emerged victorious in each of them. With the Nationals on the brink of elimination, the 31-year-old right-hander delivered his most important performance of the playoffs. Strasburg allowed only two earned runs on five hits across 8 1/3 innings. He recorded seven strikeouts and walked two. The Nationals jumped ahead with an RBI single by Anthony Rendon in the first. In the bottom of the inning, the Astros tagged Strasburg for two runs following Jose Altuve's sacrifice fly and Alex Bregman's ho...

Sports
Oct. 26 (UPI) -- The Houston Astros climbed back into the World Series with a 4-1 win over the Washington Nationals on Friday night at Nationals Park to cut their deficit to 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. Astros star Jose Altuve doubled twice and scored each time and starter Zack Greinke worked out of multiple jams to help Houston end the Nationals' eight-game winning streak, which was tied for the longest in a single postseason. Greinke, the 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner, threw only 4 2/3 innings and gave up seven hits and three walks, but managed to allow only one earned run. The Astros sent out five relievers after Greinke's departure, with the bullpen allowing only two hits in 4 1/3 scoreless innings. Josh Reddick delivered an RBI single in the second inning to push the Astros in f...

Houston Astros fire assistant general manager Brandon Taubman

Sports
Oct. 24 (UPI) -- The Houston Astros fired assistant general manager Brandon Taubman, the team announced Thursday. In a statement released by the Astros, the organization admitted that Taubman's "inappropriate comments" about the team's acquisition of relief pitcher Roberto Osuna were aimed at a group of female reporters. Sports Illustrated's Stephanie Apstein published a report earlier this week that accused Taubman of yelling, "Thank God we got Osuna! I'm so [expletive] glad we got Osuna!" The comments, directed at a group of female reporters, came during the Astros' celebration after clinching the American League Championship Series on Saturday. During last season, Osuna served a 75-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy. The suspension stemmed f...

Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Juan Soto came up clutch with three RBIs as the wild-card Washington Nationals earned a 5-4 upset win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday at Minute Maid Park to take a 1-0 lead in the World Series opener. The Nationals earned their first World Series victory in franchise history after breaking Astros ace Gerrit Cole's 19-game winning streak. Washington got a game-tying solo home run from the 20-year-old Soto, who had a two-run double four innings later that provided the game-deciding runs. Soto finished with three hits and a stolen base against the Astros. Ryan Zimmerman also homered to back Nationals starter Max Scherzer to the win. The Astros jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Yuli Gurriel doubled to deep left. Jose Altuve and George Springer each scored...

Altuve was named ALCS MVP for his performance. Houston hosts the Washington Nationals in Game 1 of the World Series at 8:08 p.m. EDT Tuesday. The Astros used stellar defense and an early home run to take control of the game at Minute Maid Park in Houston. Yankees first baseman D.J.
