Italy's ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo has been killed in an ambush, the United Nations has said. Luca Attanasio, 43, who was married with three young daughters, was in a convoy on his way from the eastern regional capital Goma to see a feeding programme in Rutshuru, close to the borders with Rwanda and Uganda. An Italian military policeman, Vittorio Iacovacci, 30, and an unnamed Congolese driver who was working for the UN's World Food Programme also died, the government in Rome said. Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Armed members of groups that support embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro attacked a convoy transporting opposition lawmakers to the National Assembly, preventing them from entering the legislative palace, officials said. A video shared on the official Twitter account for opposition leader and Venezuela's self-appointed interim president Juan Guaido showed men pursuing the vehicle as one man attacked it with a pylon. A man is then seen emerging from the crowd before smashing the vehicle's back window, forcing its driver to speed away. Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Protesters in Bolivia attacked the mayor of a small town on Thursday after reports that protesters had been killed. Masked men dragged Vinto Mayor Patricia Arce of the governing Mas Party barefoot through the streets, made her kneel down, cut her hair, doused her in red paint and forced her to sign a resignation letter before handing her over to police. People shouted "murderer, murderer" as she was dragged through the streets and protesters set her office on fire and smashed the town hall windows. Oct. 11 (UPI) -- An Iranian oil tanker was struck by assumed rockets off the coast of Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea on Friday, Iranian officials said, becoming the latest maritime incident in the area as tensions between Tehran and Washington skyrocket. The National Iranian Tanker Company said its oil tanker, Sabity, was hit by rockets some 60 miles from the Saudi Arabian port city of Jeddah as it was passing through along the Red Sea, the state-run IRNA reported. All crew onboard are reportedly safe and the ship is in stable condition only sustaining surface damage, the report said.
