ReutersAn awards ceremony hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler is up there with raindrops on roses as one of our absolute favourite things. But there was plenty more to enjoy about Sunday's Golden Globe Awards beyond the comedy duo's excellent bicoastal hosting.Nomadland and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm were the big winners of the night, while The Crown dominated the TV categories.Meanwhile, there were three significant surprises in the film categories - with Andra Day, Rosamund Pike and Jodie Foster all beating the favourites in their respective acting groups to claim victory.Mank was the most nominated film of the night and yet went home empty-handed, which may not bode well for its Oscar chances next month. But the biggest surprise was that the Golden Globes almost finished on time, running ...

A new study says the amount of global warming already baked into the air because of past carbon pollution is enough to blow past internationally agreed upon climate limitsBy SETH BORENSTEIN AP Science WriterJanuary 4, 2021, 10:18 PM• 4 min readThe amount of baked-in global warming, from carbon pollution already in the air, is enough to blow past international agreed upon goals to limit climate change, a new study finds. But it’s not game over because, while that amount of warming may be inevitable, it can be delayed for centuries if the world quickly stops emitting extra greenhouse gases from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas, the study’s authors say.For decades, scientists have talked about so-called “committed warming” or the increase in future temperature based on past carbon diox...

Chocolate chip cookies have become the first food to be baked in space in a first-of-its-kind experiment.Astronauts baked the cookies in a special zero-gravity oven at the International Space Station (ISS) last month.Sealed in individual baking pouches, three of the cookies returned to Earth on the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft on 7 January. The aim of the experiment was to study cooking options for long-haul trips. The results of the experiment, carried out by astronauts Luca Parmitano and Christina Koch, were revealed this week. The question is: how do they taste? The answer: nobody knows, yet.A spokesman for Double Tree, the company that supplied the dough, told the BBC the cookies would "soon undergo additional testing by food scien...

Chemical in baked goods, flavorings may increase obesity, diabetes risk

Health
April 25 (UPI) -- An ingredient widely used in animal feed, artificial flavorings and baked goods may cause a spike in hormones that can raise the risk of diabetes and obesity, a new study says. Eating foods with propionate can increase substances in the human body that create excessive insulin and insulin resistance, according to a study published Wednesday in Science Translational Medicine. "Understanding how ingredients in food affect the body's metabolism at the molecular and cellular level could help us develop simple but effective measures to tackle the dual epidemics of obesity and diabetes," Gokhan S. Hotamışlıgil, a researcher at Harvard Chan School and study author, said in a news release. After feeding propionate to mice, the researchers observed significant weight gain and a ...
