Researcher: Calf born to endangered Pacific Northwest orcas

Technology
Researchers say there's a new calf among the population of critically endangered killer whales that live in the waters between Washington state and Canada. Ken Balcomb, founding director of the Center for Whale Research, told The Seattle Times that staff first saw the calf Friday at the eastern end of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The youngster looks healthy, but survival rates for baby orcas are only about 50 percent, he said. The whales have been starving amid a dearth of salmon. Vessel noise and pollution have complicated their plight. No calf born in the last three years has survived. One whale drew international attention when she carried her dead calf on her head for 17 days last summer. Two other orcas are known to be sick, and researchers fear they could die within months. The sout...

Why are more boys than girls born every single year?

Health
Every year, there are always more baby boys than girls born in England and Wales. Fact. Why?Since records began in 1838, the cries of babies born every year have been predominately male. In not one year, stretching back to the start of Queen Victoria's reign, have girls outnumbered boys at birth. In 2017, in England and Wales, for example, there were 348,071 live male births and 331,035 live female births - a difference of roughly 17,000.And that higher tally of males compared to females born each year is a pattern that has repeated itself for nearly 180 years. In fact, a ratio of roughly 105 male births for every 100 female ones is generally seen as natural and normal. It is fairly consistent around the world, although in some coun...

Baby born after womb transplant from dead donor

Technology
A mother has given birth to a healthy baby girl after surgeons implanted a womb in her body from a deceased donor. The case study - published in The Lancet - in Brazil demonstrates that uterus donations from deceased donors are a potential avenue of treatment for women with uterine infertility.Although uterus transplants are a growing area of medicine, they remain highly experimental and are very difficult surgeries to complete.Uterine transplants from living donors have occurred before. A total of 39 transplants have resulted in 11 live births - with the first taking place in Sweden in 2013.There have been 10 uterus transplants from deceased donors attempted in the US, the Czech Republic, and Turkey, but this is the first one which resulted in a live birth. ...

How many animals are born in the world every day?

Science
Birds do it, bees do it, even educated fleas do it - well, maybe they don't fall in love but they do procreate, so can we estimate how many animals are born every day across the world? That was the question posed by a listener to the BBC's More or Less programme, a show which aims to make sense of the numbers that inform our lives.First things first, what do we mean by the term "animal"? The Oxford English Dictionary defines an animal as "a living organism which feeds on organic matter, typically having specialised sense organs and nervous system and able to respond rapidly to stimuli".So that's mammals and non-mammals, vertebrates and invertebrates, animals that hatch, and animals that have live births. ...
