June 5 (UPI) -- Brooklyn Nets star forward Kevin Durant said Friday that he will not return for the 2019-20 NBA season when it resumes next month. Durant, who signed a four-year, $ 164 million contract with the Nets before the start of this season, hasn't played since tearing his Achilles tendon during Game 5 of last year's NBA Finals while playing for the Golden State Warriors. Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Brooklyn Nets star point guard Kyrie Irving suffered a left-side facial fracture after being elbowed in the face during a workout at the team's practice facility, the team announced Wednesday. The Nets labeled Irving as day-to-day with the injury. Brooklyn sent Irving to the hospital for further evaluation Tuesday after he was injured during a pickup game. League sources told the New York Daily News that Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson accompanied him to the hospital following the injury. The Nets signed Irving in July after two seasons with the Boston Celtics. He had to wear a protective mask during games to protect a previous facial fracture, including early in the 2017-18 campaign after he was elbowed by former teammate Aron Baynes. Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A federal prison in Brooklyn, N.Y., reportedly has partial heat and electricity as the city's temperature dropped as low as 3 degrees Fahrenheit this week. Since Jan. 5, the Metropolitan Detention Center in the Sunset Park neighborhood has had limited electricity for the more than 1,600 inmates housed there, The New York Times reported. An electrical pane blew out last month, union leaders told the newspaper, and after it was repaired, it caught fire Sunday. A new electrical panel should be installed by Monday, said the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The heating issues, which started last week and were unrelated to the electrical problems, occurred last Saturday when units that draw water up from the boilers froze, according to union leaders who spoke to facilities workers.
