Chicago Cubs host Colorado Rockies in NL Wild Card Game

Chicago Cubs host Colorado Rockies in NL Wild Card Game

Sports
CHICAGO -- In the matter of just a few hours Monday, the Chicago Cubs went from being tied for the best record in the National League to finding themselves playing for their baseball lives on Tuesday. Despite that, however, they are just glad to still be alive. The Cubs will look to extend their season on Tuesday when they host the NL Wild Card Game against the Colorado Rockies at Wrigley Field. Chicago (95-68) missed on a chance to host the NLD when they lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1 on Monday in the one-game tiebreaker for the Central Division title. Instead, they will host the Rockies (91-72), who dropped a 5-2 decision to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Monday's other divisional tiebreaker. With the loss, the Rockies will fly cross-country to face the Cubs for the right to play the ...

Chicago Cubs hope Cole Hamels can be stopper vs. Cincinnati Reds

Sports
CHICAGO -- When the Chicago Cubs traded for Cole Hamels, they figured the veteran starter would add depth to their rotation as they dealt with the uncertainty of Yu Darvish's return. But after the Cubs shut Darvish down for the season earlier this week and with Chicago's offense freshly breaking out of a slump heading into Thursday's series-opener against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field, Hamels' impressive start to his time with the Cubs may be even more valuable than originally expected. Hamels has allowed just two earned runs in his four Cubs' starts combined and has posted wins in three of his four outings. Now, with the Cubs having lost three of their last four games, getting another steady performance out of Hamels (8-9, 4.00 ERA) on Thursday may just be what the Cubs need as ...

Chicago Bears GM 'optimistic' first-round pick Roquan Smith will be in camp

Sports
Chicago Bears first-round draft pick Roquan Smith has yet to report to training camp, but general manager Ryan Pace believes that is about to change in the near future. "We're optimistic he's here soon," Pace told reporters Thursday, noting details in Smith's contract were the reason for the hold up. "There's a process and meanwhile we're moving forward." Pace did not set a timetable for Smith to report, per the Chicago Sun-Times. Smith, an inside linebacker who was the eighth overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, did not report with rookies on Monday and continued to be absent as veterans came to Olivet Nazarene University on Thursday in Bourbonnais, Ill. The 6-foot-1, 236-pound Smith helped lead Georgia to the national championship game last season, winning the Butkus Award as the t...

Chicago Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky expects experience to pay off

Sports
Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky was the second player taken in the 2017 NFL Draft, and he hopes a year of experience helps him perform on a level befitting his draft status this season. "The experience aspect and how to prepare day in and day out," Trubisky said on SiriusXM NFL Radio. "The grind of how long the season is, because you obviously don't get that from the college season. You add a bunch more weeks in the NFL in everything you've got to do on a day-in, day-out basis. The speed of the game, and how there's no weak spots on the other side of the ball. Everyone's a baller in the NFL. "You've just got to come prepared or else you're not going to be able to do your job correctly. I definitely learned a lot about how you have to handle yourself as an NFL quarterback and...

The Chicago Bears announced Monday they signed five players, including offensive lineman Matt McCants, and also placed four players on waivers. McCants has played 28 NFL games, including three starts, while with the Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns and Bears. He has not started a game since 2013. The Bears also signed wide receiver Matt Fleming, defensive back John Franklin III, offensive lineman Jeremi Hall and defensive back Tyrin Holloway. The team waived offensive lineman Travis Averill, linebacker Howard Jones, offensive lineman Cameron Lee and linebacker Nyles Morgan. Franklin played quarterback and receiver during his college career, which included stops at Florida State, Auburn and Florida Atlantic. He also starred in Netflix's "Last Chance U" documentary series. Holloway t...
