March 29 (UPI) -- Roughly one-fifth of high school students in Colorado report having access to a handgun, according to the results of a survey published Monday by the Journal of Pediatrics. Advertisement Students were 24% more likely to report easy handgun access if they felt sad or hopeless almost every day for two weeks, the data showed. In addition, they were about 30% more likely to report easy handgun access if they had attempted suicide or had been in a physical fight in the past year, the researchers behind the survey said. "Our findings highlight that it is relatively easy to access a handgun in Colorado for high school students," study co-author Ashley Brooks-Russell said in a press release. "This finding, combined with the high prevalence of feeling sad or depressed and suicid...

Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Utah State has canceled Saturday's game against Colorado State because of concerns voiced by players about religious discrimination in the school's search for a new football coach, the university said Friday. The cancellation was announced shortly after Aggies players revealed their decision to opt out of the regular-season finale because of alleged comments made by Utah State president Noelle Cockett regarding interim head coach Frank Maile. Advertisement The school said it will meet with the student-athletes to "hear their concerns in an open dialogue so it can address them." "I am devastated that my comments were interpreted as bias against anyone's religious background," Cockett said in a statement Friday. "Throughout my professional career and, especially, as preside...

Ocean patterns help scientists forecast drought, water flow in the Colorado river

Science
Oct. 9 (UPI) -- By analyzing what researchers call "long-term ocean memory," scientists have been able to identify connections between flow rates in the Colorado River and sea surface temperatures in parts of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The breakthrough analysis -- described Friday in the journal Communications Earth and Environment -- allowed scientists to develop a forecasting model capable of predicting the Colorado River water supply on multi-year timescales. Advertisement The Colorado River, the most important water resource in the West, is essential to energy production, food and drinking water security, forestry and tourism in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah. Access to more accurate long-term forecasting models could aid water resource management decisions. ...

Colorado traffic deaths up 75 per year since pot legalization, study says

June 22 (UPI) -- Traffic fatalities have increased in Colorado since the state legalized the use of recreational marijuana, an analysis published Monday by JAMA Internal Medicine has found. Since the state opted to legalize recreational use of the drug in 2014, there have been an additional 75 deaths resulting from traffic accidents, on average, annually, the researchers estimated. Advertisement Conversely, Washington State, which lifted prohibitions on marijuana the same year, has seen traffic-related deaths remain relatively stable, they said. "Colorado and Washington State recreational cannabis laws differ in many ways, including purchasing limits, sales taxes, ability to grow cannabis at home and density of retail stores," researchers wrote in the study. "These factors may have contr...
