Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Former Chadian prime minister Moussa Faki Mahamat won a second term as chair of African Union Commission Saturday. Faki ran unopposed and received support from 51 of 55 member states in the vote, which opened a two-day virtual summit. March 6 (UPI) -- The Navy will commission its newest expeditionary sea base, the USNS Hershel "Woody" Williams, at a ceremony in Norfolk, Va., Saturday morning. According to the Pentagon, U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W. Va, is slated to deliver the commissioning ceremony's principal address. Manchin will be joined by Tracie Jean Ross and Tavie Jane Ross, who are the ship's sponsors and are the daughters of Hershel "Woody" Williams, the last surviving Medal of Honor Recipient awarded for heroism at the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. Aug. 2 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy's 17th littoral combat ship, the Freedom-class USS Billings, will be commissioned Saturday at Naval Air Station Key West. U.S. Sen. Jon Tester is due to deliver the principle address, and his wife, Sharla, is sponsor of the ship for the commissioning, scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday in Key West. The vessel is set to be homeported in Mayport, Fla., more than 500 miles north of Key West, near Jacksonville. The commissioning will be streamed live at the Navy Live blog. Nov. 28 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy will commission the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Thomas Hudner during a Dec. 1 ceremony in Boston, Mass., at 10 a.m. Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker will deliver the ceremonies principal address with Hudner's widow and the wife of retired Vice Adm. Michael Miller as sponsors, the Navy announced on Wednesday. USS Thomas Hudner is named after the naval aviator and Medal of Honor recipient Capt. Thomas J. Hudner Jr., who was awarded the decoration in 1951 for heroism in the Korean War. It will be the first U.S. Navy ship to bear the name Thomas Hudner. Hudner was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in April.
