Criminals worry as dark net markets disappear

Technology
Four of the largest criminal marketplaces on the dark net were unreachable on Friday, prompting speculation about police activity. All four marketplaces - the Dream Market, the Trade Route, the Tochka Free Market and the creatively named Wall Street Market - allowed anonymous users to trade illicit goods in cryptocurrencies. It is not unusual for such marketplaces to disappear with their customers' cash, which they often hold as an escrow service, but the fact that the four largest have vanished simultaneously has provoked interest.Users of dark net discussion forums on the open web have warned that the sites could be targeted by a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack - a way of forcing websites offline."Whether or not it's law enforcement carrying out the attacks is another question,...

Scientists work to keep NASA's space telescope in the dark

Science
Sept. 12 (UPI) -- NASA scientists are taking on the vital task of ensuring unwanted infrared light does not interfere with the optical testing of the James Webb Space Telescope."One of the challenges of testing an infrared telescope is that room-temperature objects [such as the walls of the vacuum chamber itself, or the warm electronics systems inside it] glow at the wavelengths of light that the telescope is trying to measure," Randy Kimble, a scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said in a press release. "If not carefully controlled, that warm glow can provide an unwanted background in the telescope's images, which would compromise the optical testing."Due to the telescope's extreme sensitivity to infrared light, scientists are using a cold, gaseous helium sh...
New map of Universe's dark matter

New map of Universe's dark matter

Science
Researchers have released the most accurate map ever produced of the dark matter in our Universe. The team surveyed more than 26 million galaxies in the largest study of its kind. The map will help scientists understand what dark matter is made from and learn more about another mysterious phenomenon called dark energy. The results have been released by the international Dark Energy Consortium (DES).According to Professor Ofer Lahav of University College London (UCL), and chair of the DES Advisory Board, the map would provide new insights into how the Universe operates."Dark energy and dark matter represent probably one of the biggest mysteries in the world of science. And this has generated a lot of interest across the whole of science because it is a major shakeup. And actually we still don'...

This Is What Health's Food Director Eats in a Day (Dark Chocolate Made the Cut!)

Because of my work as Health's Food Director, people will sometimes ask if I either cook elaborate, multi-course meals every night, or if I never cook at home since it’s part of my job. The reality is actually neither of these—I’m a busy working mom, and I cook often for my family (my husband is an excellent cook and does a lot of it as well), but the meals we make are usually pretty quick and simple. Here's what I eat in a typical day.BreakfastEvery morning, the first thing I do is down a big glass of water and take my vitamins.Water just helps get me going. I drink a lot of water all day (I don’t count glasses or ounces, but I’m always sipping), and that glass first thing is a good jump-start. After that, I make a cup of Bulletproof coffee: in my Vitamix, I blend about 12 oz. coffee with
