New galactic test clarifies existence of dark matter

Science
June 25 (UPI) -- New computer models designed to simulate the distribution of dwarf galaxies surrounding the Milky Way have clarified the existence of dark matter. The models helped researchers simulate "radial acceleration relation," or RAR, the relationship between the movement of satellite galaxies caused the attraction between galactic matter. RAR considers the observed circular acceleration of a galaxy and the acceleration explained by the galaxy's distribution of ordinary matter. The new models account for acceleration caused by dark matter, as well. "We have now simulated, for the first time, the RAR of dwarf galaxies on the assumption that dark matter exists," Cristiano Porciani, a researcher with the Argelander Institute for Astronomy at the University of Bonn, said in a news re...

The whales who love to sing in the dark

Science
Beneath the Arctic sea ice, in the blanket of January's polar night, bowhead whales most prefer to sing. While the songs of humpback whales have long received the most attention, it turns out that their baleen cousins could have a far greater repertoire.A study of a bowhead population near Svalbard has shown that their musical calls may be as varied as those of songbirds. This would make them unique among whale populations, and possibly even mammals.Whalesong mixtapeOver the course of three years, the whales of the Spitsbergen population produced 184 unique song types. The vocalisations were detected 24 hours a day throughout most of the winter each year."The alphabet for the bowhead has got thousands of letters as far as we can tell," Prof Kate Stafford, lead author of the study published i...

'Unfortunate Events' villain Neil Patrick Harris says kids crave dark humor

Entertainment
March 29 (UPI) -- Neil Patrick Harris, who plays the villainous Count Olaf in A Series of Unfortunate Events, appreciates that kids -- including his own -- crave dark humor."They'd rather read the Grimm's fairytale and have something caustic happen as the moral, as opposed to being fed a happy tale with a happy ending and, so, I think because of that hunger, it's easy to delve into that," Harris told reporters at a recent roundtable in New York.Harris has 7-year-old twins, Gideon and Harper, with husband David Burtka.Famous for his work in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother and known as the go-to emcee for numerous awards shows, the Emmy and Tony winner said he is now drawn to projects he can share with his son and daughter."As a parent, I became highly aware of what they can watch because I...

Ghostly galaxy may be missing dark matter

Science
An unusually transparent galaxy about the size of the Milky Way is prompting new questions for astrophysicists. The object, with the catchy moniker of NGC1052-DF2, appears to contain no dark matter. If this turns out to be true, it may be the first galaxy of its kind - made up only of ordinary matter. Currently, dark matter is thought to be essential to the fabric of the Universe as we understand it.The study is published in Nature. A new map of the Universe's dark matterHubble scores unique view of distant galaxyGhostly glowThe authors of the study weren't initially on the hunt for a dark matter-free galaxy; instead they had set out to take a closer look at large, ultra-diffuse galaxies. These are similar in size to the spiral galaxies we're more familiar with, but have a fraction of the nu...

Search for first stars yields proof of dark matter

Science
Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Astronomers say they've discovered evidence of dark matter. Scientists found the dark matter signatures while searching for the universe's first stars.According to a team of researchers from Tel Aviv University and Arizona State University, the newly discovered signal is the product of interactions between normal and dark matter -- the first of its kind. The signal hails from the distance universe, when the cosmos was still in its infancy -- 180 million years after the Big Bang."Dark matter is the key to unlocking the mystery of what the universe is made of," Rennan Barkana, head of the astrophysics department at Tel Aviv's School of Physics and Astronomy, said in a news release. "We know quite a bit about the chemical elements that make up the Earth, the sun and other star...
