BAE to develop conflict modeling software for DARPA

Business
June 12 (UPI) -- BAE Systems has been contracted by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to develop software that models political and military conflicts around the world. The $ 4.2 million contract, announced Monday by the defense contractor, is the first phase of software development for the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory as part of its Causal Exploration of Complex Operational Environments program. The software -- called Causal Modeling for Knowledge Transfer, Exploration and Temporal Simulation, or CONTEXTS -- is meant to help the Department of Defense model political, territorial and economic tensions that lead to military conflicts as a means of helping to plan ahead for them. "Military planners often conduct manual research and use limited modelling tools to generate ...

New DARPA radar sensor captures video through clouds

Business
Sept. 29 (UPI) -- A new radar sensor that can capture real-time video through clouds has been developed and demonstrated by the U.S. military. The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, said the sensor is part of its Video Synthetic Aperture Radar, or ViSAR, program that recently completed flight testing."The recent flight tests of the ViSAR sensor marked a major program milestone toward our goal, proving that we can take uninterrupted live video of targets on the ground even when flying through or above clouds," Bruce Wallace, program manager in DARPA's Strategic Technology Office, said in a news release. "The EO/IR sensors on board the test aircraft went blank whenever clouds obscured the view, but the synthetic aperture radar tracked ground objects continuously through...

Logos Technologies gets DARPA contract for SilentHawk motorcycle

Business
Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Logos Technologies is receiving a second Phase 2 contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for the development of the SilentHawk hybrid electric motorcycle. The motorcycle combines a RedShift MX racing bike produced by Alta Motors with a front-wheel drive system and range extender developed by Logos. It is designed to produce minimum engine noise for use by soldiers behind enemy lines."In 'silent' mode, when the range-extension genset is off, SilentHawk is about as loud as a normal office conversation," said Dale Turner, SilentHawk program manager."When the rider is out of harm's way, and the range-extension system is engaged to charge the motorcycle's propulsion battery and to provide auxiliary power for equipment, it's still only as loud a vacuum cleane...

DARPA demonstrates TALONS parasail mast system

Business
Aug. 16 (UPI) -- The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has completed a test demonstration of its Towed Airborne Lift of Naval Systems, or TALONS, surveillance and communications parasail mast. The Cyclone-class coastal patrol vessel USS Zephyr tested the TALONS over three days off the coast of Naval Station Mayport, Fla. The tests found that the parasail mast deployed and recovered safely and increased the communications range of the Zephyr to its small rigid-hull boats."We're very pleased with the USS Zephyr testing, which showed that a future system based on TALONS could provide operational benefits for even small Navy vessels," DARPA program manager Scott Littlefield said. The TALONS is being developed to lift up to 150 lbs. of intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and c...
