OKUMA, Japan -- Inside a giant decontamination facility at the destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant, workers in hazmat suits monitor radioactive water pumped from three damaged reactors, making sure it's adequately — though not completely — treated. Three lines of equipment connected to pipes snaking around in this dimly lit, sprawling facility can process up to 750 tons of contaminated water a day. Four other lines elsewhere in the plant can process more. From there, the water is pumped to a complex of about 1,000 temporary storage tanks that crowd the plant's grounds, where additional tanks are still being built. Officials say the huge tanks will be completely full by the summer of 2022. The decontamination process, which The Associated Press viewed on a recent tour, is a key elemen

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn will be squaring off in the first televised debate of Britain’s election campaignBy DANICA KIRKA and JILL LAWLESS Associated PressNovember 19, 2019, 4:09 PM5 min read Prime Minister Boris Johnson and opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn prepared to square off Tuesday in the first live televised debate of Britain’s election, each trying to spark a lackluster campaign to life. The hour-long encounter — the first-ever head-to-head TV debate between a British prime minister and their chief challenger — offers Corbyn a chance to make up ground in opinion polls, which show his Labour Party trailing Johnson's Conservatives ahead of the Dec. 12 election. For Johnson, it’s a chance to shake off a wobbly start that has seen the Conservatives th

New carrier heads to sea for tests amid debate over delays

The nation's newest aircraft carrier left a Virginia shipyard and returned to sea for more tests Friday, just days after fresh concerns were raised in Washington over when the highly advanced ship will be ready for combat. The USS Gerald R. Ford departed for sea trials in the wake of a public back-and-forth between a congresswoman and U.S. Navy leaders over delays, cost overruns and systems that aren't fully operational. For example, not all of the ship's weapons elevators, which transport missiles and bombs to the flight deck, have been completed. Speaking at a congressional hearing Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Elaine Luria said the Ford should have been deployable in 2018 but may not be ready until 2024. "I just truly don't feel this is a great investment as a taxpayer — $ 13 billion on a ship t

100 years later, historians still debate baseball’s darkest moment

Sports
Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Players from the team are long gone, but tales remain from the Black Sox scandal from the 1919 World Series considered by many historians to be the darkest moment in America's pastime. Wednesday marks the 100th anniversary of the end of that best-of-nine World Series, which the Cincinnati Reds won amid accusations of White Sox players taking bribes from gamblers in exchange for poor play. Literature on the scandal is old and scattered, with websites and books devoted to debunking the common myths behind the Black Sox. White Sox players Eddie Cicotte, Claude "Lefty" Williams, Arnold "Chick" Gandil, Charles "Swede" Risberg, George "Buck" Weaver, Oscar "Happy" Felsch, Fred McMullin and Joe "Shoeless Joe" Jackson were permanently banned from baseball for their roles in the fi...
