Dec. 27 (UPI) -- New analysis of the critically endangered Grauer's gorilla's genome suggests the species' health is suffering from a loss of genetic diversity. Scientists sequenced the genomes of several eastern gorilla specimens collected a century ago and compared the results to the genomes of modern Grauer's gorillas. The results, published Thursday in the journal Current Biology, showed Grauer's gorillas have accumulated harmful mutations as they have lost genetic diversity. "We found that the genetic diversity in Grauer's gorilla has declined significantly in just a few generations," Tom van der Valk, a doctoral student at Uppsala University in Sweden, said in a news release. Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Ceres, the solar system's innermost dwarf planet, features a wandering pole, new research confirms. Using gravity data collected by NASA's Dawn mission, researchers at the Planetary Science Institute were able to map density variations in Ceres crust, revealing topographical anomalies best explained by a polar reorientation. "The topography shows the remnants of an equatorial ridge compatible with the position of the paleo-equator," researchers wrote in a paper published this week in the journal Nature Geoscience. The axis around which a planetary body spins affects the density of the body's outer layers, including the crust. April 17 (UPI) -- New analysis of a slice of a meteorite containing unusual diamonds suggest the space rock came from a long lost planet.In 2008, an asteroid measuring 13 feet across penetrated Earth's atmosphere and exploded above Sudan, scattering rocky fragments across the Nubian Desert. The fragments were gathered and organized into the Almahata Sitta collection.The Almahata Sitta fragments are ureilites, a kind of rocky meteorite containing clusters of tiny diamonds. Scientists believe ureilite diamonds can form three ways: under the extreme pressure triggered by a planetary collision, through chemical vapor deposition or under normal pressure conditions inside the parent body -- as most diamonds on Earth are formed.Over the last decades, several teams of researchers have studied the ...
