Letter shows a fearful Einstein long before Nazis' rise

Technology
More than a decade before the Nazis seized power in Germany, Albert Einstein was on the run and already fearful for his country's future, according to a newly revealed handwritten letter. His longtime friend and fellow Jew, German Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau, had just been assassinated by right-wing extremists and police had warned the noted physicist that his life could be in danger too. So Einstein fled Berlin and went into hiding in northern Germany. It was during this hiatus that he penned a handwritten letter to his beloved younger sister, Maja, warning of the dangers of growing nationalism and anti-Semitism years before the Nazis ultimately rose to power, forcing Einstein to flee his native Germany for good. "Out here, nobody knows where I am, and I'm believed to be missing,"...

Hubble spots Einstein ring surrounding galaxy cluster

Science
April 6 (UPI) -- A new image from Hubble showcases dozens of distant galaxies, as well as an astronomical phenomenon known as an Einstein ring. The lens-like circle at the image's center represents the distortion caused by the gravity of a galaxy cluster named SDSS J0146-0929. The cluster is comprised of millions of galaxies, all tied together by the pull of gravity. The gravity of the cluster's millions of galaxies is strong enough to warp the surrounding space-time.As distant light travels toward Earth, it bends around the massive cluster, creating the lens-like phenomenon."In this image, the light from a background galaxy is diverted and distorted around the massive intervening cluster and forced to travel along many different light paths toward Earth, making it seem as though the galaxy ...

Einstein letters on God, McCarthy, Israel go up for auction

Technology
A collection of letters written by Albert Einstein is set to go to auction next week, offering a new glimpse at the Nobel-winning physicist's views on God, McCarthyism and what was then the newly established state of Israel. The five original letters, dated 1951 to 1954 and signed by Einstein, reveal a witty and sensitive side of the esteemed scientist. They were sent to quantum physicist David Bohm, a colleague who fled the United States for Brazil in 1951 after refusing to testify about his links to the Communist Party to the House Un-American Activities Committee. Bohm's widow's estate put the documents on the block after she passed away last year. One of the yellowing pages, bearing Einstein's signature and embossed seal, and a handwritten general relativity equation, opens at $ 8,000...
