Russia faces ban from all major sports events – Wada

Russia could face a ban from all major sports events over "discrepancies" in a lab database, the World Anti-Doping Agency has warned. The country has been given three weeks to explain "inconsistencies" or risk being excluded from the Olympics and world championships.Russia also faces being barred from hosting major events. "There's evidence this data has been deleted," chairman of Wada's compliance panel, Jonathan Taylor, told BBC Sport."We need to understand from the Russian authorities what their explanation is."Background Russia handed over data from its Moscow laboratory in January as a condition of its reintegration back into the sporting fold after a three-year suspension for a state-sp...

Data scientists mine government data for evidence of historical events

Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Researchers have developed a way to mine electronic government records for evidence of significant historical events. For journalists and historians, sorting through government records is a tedious but important job. Though many government records aren't released until after a news event has come and gone, once published, the documents can shed new light historical happenings.Data scientists at Columbia University in New York have developed a way to more quickly and efficiently identify insightful and important government documents.Researchers tested their new data mining methodology on newly available classified records dated between 1973 and 1977. The records include 1.4 million declassified cables, as well as metadata related to 400,000 documents delivered via diplomatic...

MIT engineers attempt to predict extreme events

Science
Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Can a new mathematical framework pinpoint the warning signs before an extreme event? A group of engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology think so.Researchers at MIT have developed a set of mathematical equations that can be used to identify patterns that precede extreme events, like a rogue wave or instability inside a gas turbine."Currently there is no method to explain when these extreme events occur," Themistoklis Sapsis, an associate professor of mechanical and ocean engineering at MIT, said in a news release. "We have applied this framework to turbulent fluid flows, which are the Holy Grail of extreme events. They're encountered in climate dynamics in the form of extreme rainfall, in engineering fluid flows such as stresses around an airfoil, and acoust...

Seismic events strike shale-rich Oklahoma for second day

Aug. 4 (UPI) -- The U.S Geological Survey recorded a cluster of tremors early Friday in a part of Oklahoma on a watch list for activity related to shale oil and gas operations.Four tremors were reported as of 5:45 a.m. EDT by the USGS, the largest of which was a magnitude-3.3 event about three miles outside the town of Edmond. At least eight quakes were recorded Thursday, with Edmond experiencing a magnitude-4.2 event. One of the U.S. states with a significant amount of shale oil and natural gas, a study from the USGS found the disposal of oil and gas-related wastewater is the "primary reason" for an increase in seismic activity in central states like Oklahoma. That process is different from hydraulic fracturing.State orders related to an area of interest near Edmond translate to a volume r...
