Seven states, Puerto Rico experiencing high flu activity, CDC says

Health
Nov. 22 (UPI) -- More states reported high flu activity this week as the season heads into high gear, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In its weekly FluView report, released Friday, CDC officials noted that eight jurisdictions across the country reported high influenza activity during the week ending Nov. 16: Puerto Rico and seven states -- Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, Nevada, South Carolina, and Texas. Previously only Puerto Rico and Louisiana had reported high flu activity. In addition, 2.5 percent of all healthcare visits across the country were due to flu-related concerns, up from 2.3 percent the previous week. Lakes are experiencing worse algal blooms, global survey shows

Science
Oct. 14 (UPI) -- In lakes all over the world, algal blooms are getting more severe. In a new global survey of large, freshwater lakes -- the first of its kind -- scientists found algal blooms have become more frequent and intense over the last 30 years. Algal blooms can negatively affect humans and ecosystems by robbing freshwater of sufficient oxygen supplies and producing dangerous toxins. "Toxic algal blooms affect drinking water supplies, agriculture, fishing, recreation, and tourism," Jeff Ho, researcher at the Carnegie Institution for Science, said in a news release. "Studies indicate that just in the United States, freshwater blooms result in the loss of $ 4 billion each year." Most studies of algal growth have focused on specific bodies or water or regions, like the Great Lakes. ...

Weather: UK experiencing hotter days and 'tropical nights' – Met Office

Science
The UK has experienced more weather extremes over the last 10 years when compared with previous decades, a Met Office report has said. The hottest days have become almost 1C hotter, warm spells have increased, while the coldest days are not as cold. The number of so-called tropical nights - when temperatures stay above 20C - is increasing. The Met Office says these changes are consistent with warming driven by human activities. The new study compares UK weather data from the period 1961-1990 with the 10 years between 2008 and 2017. Venice experiencing its worst flooding since 2012

World
Tourists and residents in Venice's famous St. Mark's Square could be seen wading in nearly waist deep water as the city experienced its worst flooding since 2012. Bad weather and high winds were pushing more water in from the lagoon and city officials fear the water could reach the historic level of the 1966 flood, when the water was more than six feet above sea level. Sirens had sounded across the city early in the day when the water surpassed 43 inches. By late afternoon more than 70 percent of the city was flooded. The elevated levels shut down the city's water bus service known as vaporetti except to the outer island. Nearly all of Italy has been struck by bad weather in the past week. High winds have brought down dozens of trees across Rome, blocking roads. Schools were closed...
