The owner of the Mirror and Express newspapers has slumped to a £113m half-year loss after slashing the value of its regional publishing operations.Reach, formerly known as Trinity Mirror, said the £150m charge reflected a "more challenging outlook" for its regional businesses.They include the Manchester Evening News, Daily Record and Liverpool Echo.The results are the first since Reach completed its takeover of the Express and Star titles from Richard Desmond.The £113.5m pre-tax loss for the 26 weeks to 1 July, compares with a profit of £38.2m for the same period last year. April 27 (UPI) -- The families of Japanese abductees who are still officially recognized in Tokyo say they are hopeful about being reunited with their relatives on Friday, according to a Japanese press report.The families watched the Inter-Korea Summit and cautiously welcomed engagement between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korea's Kim Jong Un, Kyodo News reported Friday.Sakie Yokota, 82, mother of abductee Megumi Yokota, said she hoped the situation will improve as North Korea moves away from provocations.Yokota also said she will watch "how things will unfold" because of past experiences with North Korea reneging on meetings regarding the abduction issue.Ahead of the summit, Moon had told Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe he would raise the issue of abducted Japanese nati...

April 13 (UPI) -- ESA's Mars Express has photographed a unique and mysterious geologic structure on the Martian surface.Astronomers aren't sure of the crater's origins. The crater, dubbed Ismenia Patera, may have been created by a meteorite impact. It's also possible the imprint was left behind by an ancient supervolcano.The layout and structural patterns seen in and around Ismenia Patera are different and more complex than the typical impact crater. Uneven lumps of rock are found scattered around the outer edge of the crater.Scientists believe the rocky deposits are debris ejected by neighboring impacts. These miniature impacts have created their own system of gullies inside Ismenia Patera.The crater's floor is dynamic, too, showing signs of movement. The floor is likely composed of a roc...
