Volkswagen will recall 75,000 cars over seatbelt fault

Volkswagen will recall about 75,000 of its VW Polo and Seat Ibiza and Arona cars after a seatbelt fault was exposed by a Finnish car magazine test drive.A new fix would be offered to affected UK owners from Monday, VW said. The test drive in Finland showed that when three passengers were in the back seats and the car turned sharply, the centre-rear seatbelt failed.VW said the tests were under "exceptional" conditions and had not been replicated or reported elsewhere. However, consumer group Which questioned why Volkswagen had sold close to 55,000 additional cars with a "potentially lethal fault" since the problem was first identified in May.An earlier cable tie solution and an "informal recall" were rejected by regulators.Alex Neil...

3D survey details dangerous megathrust fault off Costa Rican coast

Science
Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Scientists have a better understanding of the dynamics of a dangerous megafault off the coast of Costa Rica, thanks to a new survey by researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The survey yielded detailed 3D images of the Costa Rican subduction zone, where the Cocos plate sinks and slides under the Caribbean plate.Unlike similar megathrust faults, the Costa Rican fault features unusual earthquakes, patchy in their distribution. The ruptures rarely spread to shallow depths. Scientists believe the fault's odd behavior is explained by its varied textures -- corrugated patterns created by subduction activity."Our new imagery shows large variability in the conditions along the megathrust, which may be linked to a number of earthquake phenomena we observe in the re...

Ron Paul: 50% stock market plunge ‘conceivable,' but it’s not President Trump’s fault

Ron Paul's sell-off prediction just got more severe. The former Republican Congressman from Texas believes escalating dysfunction in Washington will create even more pain for Wall Street."A 50 percent pullback is conceivable," Paul said on "Futures Now" recently. "I don't believe it's ten years off. I don't even believe it's a year off. "According to his calculations, it would cut the S&P 500 Index in half, to 1212, and the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average would collapse to 10,837.Paul noted that there's a lot of chaos in Washington right now, with an "unpredictable president" and those who are inclined to "tear him apart" but if the market takes that big of a tumble, he doesn't see it as Trump's fault. "It's all man-made. It's not the fault of Donald Trump in the last week. If th...
