Unfair playing fields, pay gaps drag down everyone’s motivation

Science
Sept. 4 (UPI) -- When people are rewarded unequally for the same work, everyone's motivation suffers. According to a new study, published Friday in the journal PLOS One, large disparities in compensation cause workers to feel less happy and, a result, it decreases their desire to work. Advertisement "Here we have shown the psychological impacts of inequality of opportunity, and how it can hurt the productivity and well-being of everyone involved," lead study author Filip Gesiarz, doctoral student in experimental psychology at the University College London, said in a news release. "Our findings may shed light on how psychological mechanisms, apart from structural barriers, can contribute to higher unemployment and lower university application rates of people from disadvantaged backgrounds,...

Ohio State QB Justin Fields: Injured knee is 80-85% healthy

Sports
Dec. 25 (UPI) -- Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields says his knee is 80 to 85 percent healthy, just days before the Buckeyes take on Clemson in one of the two national semifinals of the College Football Playoff. Fields made the comments to reporters Tuesday ahead of his team's appearance in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. The Heisman Trophy finalist plans to wear a brace during the game against the Tigers. "My knee's probably not where I want it to be right now," Fields said. "But I think with treatment every day and just resting it every day, hopefully, it will be better by the game." Fields aggravated a previous knee injury twice during the season -- in the Buckeyes' Nov. 23 win against Penn State and again in their big rivalry game victory at Michigan a week later. Fields has had only...

Mowing milkweed fields helps monarch butterflies

Science
March 12 (UPI) -- Monarch butterflies face a number of threats, but lawnmowers aren't one of them. According to a new study, freshly mowed fields can actually benefit monarch butterflies. According to a new study, published this week in the journal Biological Conservation, monarchs lay more eggs on young milkweed. During their larval stage, butterflies only eat milkweed. "Monarch butterflies scout young milkweed to lay their eggs," Nate Haan, postdoctoral research associate in entomology at Michigan State University, said in a news release. "And in terms of a food source, milkweed is more like spinach when it's young and comparable to cardboard as it ages." Because fewer predators visit milkweed when its young and without flowers, the butterflies are more likely to survive their larval s...
