Boeing awarded $1.2B deal for 8 F-15EX fighter jets

Business
July 14 (UPI) -- The U.S. Air Force has awarded Boeing a $ 1.2 billion contract -- with a ceiling of nearly $ 23 billion -- to build the first lot of eight F-15EX fighter jets. The F-15EX is the newest version of a tactical fighter aircraft the Air Force has used since 1976, and are expected to replace the service's oldest F-15C/Ds, the Air Force said on Monday. Advertisement "The F-15EX is the most advanced version of the F-15 ever built, due in large part to its digital backbone," said Lori Schneider, Boeing F-15EX program manager, in a press statement. "Its unmatched range, price and best-in-class payload capacity make the F-15EX an attractive choice for the U.S. Air Force." Based on the F-15QA fighters Boeing has produced for Qatar's military, the newer plane is designed to handle a c...

Turkey deports suspected Islamic State fighter to U.S. after he was ‘stuck’ at Greek border

World
Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Turkey deported an American suspected Islamic State fighter to the United States after the man was held in limbo at the Turkey-Greece border, Turkish officials announced Friday. Turkey-supported forces captured Muhammad Darwish Bassam, 39, who is of Jordanian descent, in October during Turkey's military offensive in Syria. Turkey initially sent Bassam to Greece, his country of choice, but Greece denied him entry. Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said Bassam was "stuck" between Turkey and Greece. The United States also initially refused him, but later approved the deportation. "Upon the commitment of the USA to issue a travel document, necessary procedures have been initiated to send the foreign terrorist fighter to the USA," the Turkish Interior Ministry said. Tu...

Report: Turkey nearing purchase of Russian Su-35 fighter planes

Business
Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Turkey is nearing the purchase of between 36 and 48 Su-35 fighter planes from Russia, Turkish government sources confirmed. The figure of 48 planes would comprise two squadrons of the plane, and would complement the S-400 missile defense system that Turkey, a NATO member, purchased from Russia earlier this year and delivered in August. The plane and missile system are part of a cooperative engagement capability in which the Su-35s would act as airborne radar to guide the S-400's missiles as they engage enemy aircraft or missiles. Data from the S-400's ground based radars could also serve an Su-35 pilot, since the S-400's strongest capability is networking with other systems, including fighter planes and the Russian-made Pantsir low-level air defense system. Turkey was su...

South Korea to buy 20 more F-35 fighter planes

Business
Oct. 11 (UPI) -- South Korea plans to purchase 20 more F-35 fighter planes from the United States, its arms procurement agency announced. Forty of the fifth-generation stealth jets were ordered from builder Lockheed Martin in 2014 in a deal valued at about $ 6.4 billion. The first group of planes arrived in South Korea in recent months and three were displayed for the first time last week on the country's Armed Forces Day, Oct. 1. "The government is preparing to launch the second phase of the F-X III [the code name for South Korea's purchased] in 2021 for the five years to come," the Defense Acquisition Program Administration said in an Oct. 7 report to the country's National Assembly. It is undetermined if the sale will involve the F-35A or F-35B variant of the plane. The latter has a s...

Israeli fighter planes participate in British air exercises

Business
Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Israeli fighter planes returned home Friday after their first deployment to Britain for air exercises with planes of the United States and European countries. F-15 planes of the Israel Air Force flew in combat simulations with those of the United States, Germany, Italy and Britain in Exercise Cobra Warrior, a 20-day annual event at the RAF base in Waddington. It was Israel's first participation in the aerial drill and its first time in British airspace. Although the two forces have worked together extensively, the visit by the IAF marks a shift toward a more open relationship with the RAF. Over 50 aircraft, including support aircraft, participated in the event. Israel sent seven F-15 planes, as well as a KC-707 tanker and a C-130J Hercules cargo plane used for logistics...
