Samvat 2075 was a year of DIIs: SIP flows helped cushion FII outflow hit

A continuous flow of money from retail investors into domestic mutual funds through systematic investment plans (SIPs) helped domestic institutional investors (DIIs) cushion a bigger fall in domestic equity in Samvat 2075. In last one year since last Diwali, DIIs poured in a net Rs 53,000 crore into the domestic stock. They were net sellers in just three of last 12 months. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) invested a net of Rs 69,000 crore in the 12-month period, but they put in most of it before March. In this financial year, FIIs have bought stocks worth Rs 13,000 crore against DIIs’ Rs 64,000 crore. “Domestic investors buy stocks when they get flows. What would a mutual fund guy do if he gets inflows? He has to buy, he can’t sit on it. But what I have seen is that DIIs have been us

California beach closes after Mexico sewage flows north

Health
The entire shoreline of a Southern California city is closed to swimmers after sewage-contaminated runoff flowed into California from Mexico's Tijuana River. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the San Diego County Department of Environment Health issued the order Sunday, expanding the closure that has been in place for months for part of the Imperial Beach coast. Officials say more than 110 million gallons (416 million liters) of toxic storm water has flowed north from Mexico since April. The closure will be in place until testing shows the water is safe. California and the cities of Imperial Beach and Chula Vista sued the Trump administration last year over the recurring toxic flows from Mexico. The lawsuit seeks to force the U.S. government to upgrade the collection system that diverts...

By controlling exciton flows, scientists can build more efficient electronics

Science
Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Scientists have found a way to control exciton flows at room temperature, paving the way for the development of faster, more efficient electronics. When an electron absorbs light, it gets bumped into a higher energy band. As quantum physics reveals, the newly energized electron leaves an "electron hole" behind. Because the high-energy electron has a negative charge and the hole has positive charge, the duo remain bound -- forming an exciton. Excitons are only found in semiconducting and insulating materials, and their unique properties can be studied in 2D materials. Physicists regularly look for new quantum properties by combing 2D materials. Recently, researchers in Switzerland layered tungsten diselenide with molybdenum diselenide, WSe2 with MoSe2, to create a new 2D me...

NPAs, provident fund and SIP flows together will put between Rs 1,10,000 crore and Rs 1,25,000 crore in mutual funds this year, says Nilesh Shah, MD, Kotak AMC, talking to ET Now.Edited excerpts: When the mutual fund data for March came out, it appeared that the SIP flows and the mutual fund collections were coming down. What is the update after that? Was March an aberration?March was a normal month but people who interpreted data were in aberration. They failed to understand that in equity mutual fund, there is pure equity mutual fund where we go and invest into direct equity and there are also arbitrage funds where we invest in equity and short the futures. Impact of flows in a pure equity fund and arbitrage fund is completely different. When there are flows in pure equity fund and we bu...
