Clinical trial to offer free 3D-printed prosthetic arms to children

Health
May 16 (UPI) -- For the first time, children will be fitted with 3D-printed bionic arms produced as part of a clinical trial. Oregon Health & Science University is collaborating with Limbitless Solutions, a nonprofit based at the University of Central Florida, for the trial, which aims to test the limbs for market approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The two schools announced Wednesday at a news conference in Orlando that a total of 20 children between age 6 and 17 will be fitted with the devices by the end of this summer at the two schools. The arms will be 3D-printed at UCF for around $ 1,000 each, compared to ones that traditionally cost up to $ 100,000 and need to be replaced as children grow. "This is really like the next level for us," Dr. Albert Manero, CEO of Limbit...

The Green Bay Packers signed six picks from their 2018 NFL Draft class as well as a pair of rookie free agents, the team announced Monday. Wide receivers J'Mon Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Equanimeous St. Brown joined guard Cole Madison, defensive tackle James Looney and linebacker Kendall Donnerson in agreeing to deals with the Packers. Green Bay has signed eight members of its 11-player draft class. Cornerbacks Jaire Alexander (first round) and Josh Jackson (second round) join third-round linebacker Oren Burks as the team's remaining unsigned picks. The Packers also announced that they have signed tight end Ryan Smith and linebacker Greer Martini after the pair tried out during rookie minicamp. Moore, who is listed at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, was selected in the fourth round out o...

NFL free agent Eric Reid says he won't protest during national anthem

Sports
If free-agent safety Eric Reid lands another job in the NFL, he plans to give up kneeling during the national anthem next season. Reid joined former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in his protests against police brutality and racial injustice during the 2016 season and continued to knee during the playing of the anthem last year. "I'm just going to consider different ways to be active, different ways to bring awareness to the issues of this country to improve on," Reid said while watching his brother, Justin, at Stanford's pro day on Thursday. "I don't think it'll be in the form of protesting during the anthem. And I said 'during' because it's crazy to me that the narrative got changed to we were protesting the anthem, because that wasn't the case. But I think we're going ...

2018 NFL Free Agent guide: Top players available in free agency

Sports
If the first two months of the 2018 NFL offseason are any indication, expect the action to be dizzying when the new league year begins at 4 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday. That's when free agents can begin signing contracts and trades that have been consummated become official. A number of trades have been agreed to, with the Los Angeles Rams involved in four as they work to reshape their defense in the image of coordinator Wade Phillips. There is no other explanation for the decision to jettison linebackers Robert Quinn and Alec Ogletree, while acquiring cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib. The Rams also placed a franchise tag on safety Lamarcus Joyner. Ogletree had signed a lucrative contract extension last October. Friday saw more change in Seattle when cornerback Richard Sherman w...
