The number of confirmed coronavirus cases around the world has passed the milestone of 10 million, according to Johns Hopkins University in the US. The virus emerged in China late last year and has since led to more than 500,000 deaths, Johns Hopkins reports.Half the world's cases have been in the US and Europe, but Covid-19 is now rapidly growing in the Americas. The virus is also affecting South Asia and Africa, where it is not expected to peak until the end of July. May 25 (UPI) -- As global infections surpassed 5.5 million on Monday, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the limit on gatherings will be expanded to 100 people by the week's end. April 9 (UPI) -- The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now recommending that virtually all American adults undergo screening for hepatitis C, citing data that shows the number of cases nationally has tripled since 2009. In two separate reports released Thursday, the agency estimated that more than 50,000 Americans were diagnosed with the acute form of the virus, which affects the liver, in 2018. That same year, nearly 138,000 were diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C, the agency said. Because of these figures, the CDC simultaneously released an updated version of its guidelines on screening for the disease. April 9 (UPI) -- China has beefed up measures to prevent a second surge in coronavirus infections fueled by asymptomatic cases and those entering the country from abroad. The Asian nation at the center of the global pandemic has seen a drastic decline in new cases from its peak of nearly 4,000 infections a day in early February to reporting single-digit local infections since the middle of March. However, the country has been recording a growing number of imported cases for the past few weeks and on Thursday, Beijing's National Health Commission said of its 63 new cases over the day prior, 61 came from abroad for a total of 1,103 such cases since the outbreak began in its central city of Wuhan in December.
