CDC: Vaping injuries spike to 1,080 with 18 dead

Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Eighteen people are dead and the number of confirmed and probable lung injury cases associated with vaping has soared to 1,080 in 48 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday. An increase of 275 cases since last week includes about half new patients becoming ill in the past two weeks, the federal agencies said in a telebriefing call. The FDA still has not identified any substance or substances on which it can pin the outbreak, said Judy McMeekin, the FDA's deputy associate commissioner for regulatory affairs. Sticking to one sport could up injuries among teen athletes

Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Here's a good reason to encourage your teenager to play more than one sport: New research finds kids who concentrate on only one sport may be at risk for stress fractures, tendinitis and knee injuries. "It's wonderful for a child to love a sport and to want to engage in it, but we must keep in mind the number of hours spent playing," said study author Alison Field, a professor of epidemiology and pediatrics at Brown University. "They add up pretty quickly." The findings are a result of following more than 10,000 older children throughout the United States. The bottom line is that kids who do the most hours of intense activity per week, and that happens to be those focusing on a single sport, are the most likely to be injured. Kevin Hart has suffered major injuries in an early morning car accident, US authorities say.The comedian and actor, 40, was a passenger in a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda when the driver lost control of the car. July 12 (UPI) -- Insects can feel chronic pain, too, according to a new study. Even after an injury is healed, researchers found insects continue to experience pain. Chronic pain comes in two forms: inflammatory and neuropathic. For the study, scientists looked at neuropathic pain, caused by nerve damage, in fruit flies. In the lab, scientists damaged a nerve in one of the legs of a fly. Researchers allowed the injury to fully heal before subjecting the fruit fly to a series of tests. The experiments showed the leg remained hypersensitive for some time, even though the injury had healed.
