Israel strikes Syria, downs Iranian drone, as F-16 crashes

World
In its most serious engagement in neighboring Syria since fighting there began in 2011, Israel shot down an infiltrating Iranian drone Saturday and struck Iranian targets deep in Syria before one of its own jets was downed. The sudden escalation offers what could be a harbinger of what lies ahead as the Syrian fighting winds down and an emboldened Iran establishes a military presence that Israel vows it will never accept. Israel has issued several stern warnings of late about the increased Iranian involvement along its border in Syria and Lebanon. The Israeli Cabinet just held a meeting near the Syrian border to highlight the new threats, which it attributes to Iran's growing confidence given the success of the government of Bashar Assad in the Syrian civil war thanks to their support. Fossil found in Israel suggests Homo sapiens left Africa 180,000 years ago

Science
Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Scientists believe an ancient human jawbone found in Israel belonged to a Homo sapien. The fossil, dated between 177,000 and 194,000 years old, suggests humans left Africa 50,000 years earlier than previously thought.Last year, scientists found a 300,000-year-old Homo sapien fossil in Morocco. Previously, scientists thought Homo sapiens first emerged 200,000 years ago in East Africa.Until recently, scientists thought modern humans left Africa in a mass exodus around 60,000 years ago, spreading out across Eurasia. Over the last decade, scientists have uncovered evidence that suggests the mass exodus was preceded by earlier, smaller migrations out of Africa, some as far back as 120,000 years ago.The latest discovery -- detailed this week in the journal Science Advances -- pu...

Israel reveals plans for 40-mile underground wall around Gaza

Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Officials in Israel on Thursday gave journalists a tour of a destroyed militant Islamist tunnel and a peek at construction of an underground wall they hope will thwart terrorist groups from digging their way into Israeli territory. The massive underground barrier is the first of its kind in the world. The project, scheduled to be finished by the end of next year, is made of reinforced concrete walls that will run for 40 miles along the entire Israeli-Gaza border. The wall will have underground sensors to help to detect any future tunnels and a fence almost 30 feet tall will help prevent crossings over ground. As construction progresses, Israeli military expects to find and destroy several more attack tunnels that enter Israel from Gaza. During the last three months, Israeli f...
