May 6 (UPI) -- New research suggests director Steven Spielberg used just a little bit of creative license when making Jurassic Park. While the coordinated attacks of Velociraptor dinosaurs depicted in the 1993 blockbuster made for compelling movie viewing, a new study -- published this week in the journal Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology -- claims raptors most likely hunted solo, not in packs. "Raptorial dinosaurs often are shown as hunting in packs similar to wolves," Joseph Frederickson, a vertebrate paleontologist and director of the University of Wisconsin's Weis Earth Science Museum, said in a news release. July 5 (UPI) -- By surveying the composition of great white shark teeth, researchers were able to trace the evolutionary origins of the mackerel shark family, Lamniformes, to a small benthic shark from the Middle Jurassic. In addition to the great white, the Lamniformes family features the biggest shark in history, Megalodon, as well as the fastest modern shark, the mako shark. But according to a new study -- published this week in the journal Scientific Reports -- the group's oldest ancestor was a small bottom feeder that lived 165 million years ago. Dec. 5 (UPI) -- New research suggests Jurassic ichthyosaurs were more like modern marine mammals than previously realized. The ancient marine reptiles were ubiquitous in the Jurassic oceans. Studies of ichthyosaur fossils suggest they were dolphin-like in appearance, but until now, paleontologists knew relatively little about their biology and behavior. According to the new study, the reptiles were warm-blooded, had blubber and used coloration to camouflage themselves from predators. "Ichthyosaurs are interesting because they have many traits in common with dolphins, but are not at all closely related to those sea-dwelling mammals," Mary Schweitzer, professor of biological sciences at North Carolina State University, said in a news release. Sept. 4 (UPI) -- New analysis of fossil teeth have offered scientists new insights into the impacts of sea level rise on Jurassic food chains. Sea levels rose considerably over the course of the Jurassic period, the 56 million years between the Triassic and Cretaceous periods. As revealed by the fossil record, some species thrived, while others were pushed to the margins. To better understand the dynamics of this upheaval, scientists studied the shapes and sizes of teeth found among Jurassic strata along the coasts of England. All of the teeth were sourced from marine sediments representing an 18-million-year period when sea levels fluctuated dramatically.
