Media playback is unsupported on your deviceEngineers now have a precise expectation of when they will lose contact with the Cassini probe. The spacecraft is being ditched in the atmosphere of Saturn on Friday, bringing to an end 13 amazing years of discovery at the ringed planet. The team hopes to receive a signal for as long as possible while the satellite plummets into the giant world. But the radio will likely go dead at about 6 seconds after 04:55 local time here at mission control in California. That is 11:55:06 GMT (12:55:06 BST). This is the time that antennas on Earth lose contact. Because of the finite speed of light and the 1.4 billion km distance to Saturn, the event in space will actually have occurred 83 minutes earlier. "The spacecraft's final signal will be like an echo. I...

Last chance to suggest NASA's message to Voyager 1

Technology
It's the final day for internet users to suggest a message for NASA to beam to the Voyager 1 space probe. The craft is currently almost 13 billion miles from Earth - making it the most distant human-made object ever.It was launched on 15 September 1977 and in order for a message to be beamed to it in time for the 40th anniversary of the mission, NASA is closing the date for suggestions on Tuesday. The space agency is seeking suggestions via Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for a 60-character message to send to the unmanned Voyager 1.At the end of the entry period, the public will be allowed vote on what short message should be sent to the probe.Public polls can be a risky business in the age of the internet, with the public last year opting to name the UK's new polar research ship Boaty McBo...

Americans paid $15 billion in overdraft fees last year, CFPB says

Finance
What is the CFPB?Americans have racked up billions -- yes, billions -- of dollars worth of overdraft charges. In 2016, U.S. consumers paid a total of $ 15 billion in fees for bouncing checks or overdrafting--which is when a customer tries to make a purchase without enough money in their account to cover the transaction-- according to new data released by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. All banks with assets over $ 1 billion must report how much money it brought in via bounced check and overdraft fees, according to CFPB. And this year the industry rang up at $ 11.41 billion. That's up 2.2% from 2015, which was the first year banks began reporting total overdraft and bounced check fees to the CFPB. Adding in it's best guess for what smaller banks and credit unions charged, and CF...

UK rhino eggs 'could save last northern whites'

Science
A UK zoo is taking part in a radical plan to save the world's last three northern white rhinos from extinction. At Longleat safari park, scientists have collected eggs from southern white rhinos - a closely related sub species - to use for IVF.The eggs will help researchers to develop the technology to help the remaining northern whites to reproduce. A back-up plan is to mix eggs from the southern white rhinos with sperm from northern whites to create a hybrid. It means that if the bid to produce a pure northern white rhino fails, at least some of the critically endangered animal's genes will live on.Darren Beasley, head of animal operations at Longleat, added: "Effectively the female rhinos would act as IVF mothers, with embryos partly derived from northern white male sperm."If the procedur...
