Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Deployment of a long-range hypersonic weapon system by the U.S. Army is expected by 2023, the Association of the United States Army was told at its annual convention. Robert Strider, deputy director of Army hypersonic programs on Monday told attendees of the AUSA convention that an experimental prototype, "with residual combat capability," will be fielded by 2023, as announced by the Army last month. "Those words are tattooed on every one of us within the rapid capability and critical technologies office," Strider said. "The booster that we'll use to launch it will be absolutely common with the Navy. In fact, there's a [memorandum of agreement] in place that put the Navy in charge of design and the Army in charge of production." Strider added that a battery of eight miss...

North Korea ‘launches two more ballistic missiles into the sea’

North Korea has launched what appears to be two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea, according to South Korea's military. It is the fifth set of missile tests in less than three weeks, and is being seen as a protest at the slow pace of nuclear talks with the US, and the ongoing US-South Korea joint military exercises in the region. The launches were revealed hours after Donald Trump said he received a "beautiful" letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and predicted that they will engage in further talks to try and resolve the nuclear stand-off. North Korea has test fired two more ballistic missiles, the fourth round of weapons launches in less than two weeks.South Korea's joint chiefs of staff said the latest missiles were launched from an area in the North's western region and travelled about 279 miles (450km) before crashing into the sea off the country's eastern coast. The recent wave of missile tests comes against a backdrop of stalled nuclear disarmament talks with the US and joint military exercises between the US military and South Korean forces. The North regards such drills as an invasion rehearsal and in a statement an unidentified spokesperson said Pyongyang remained committed to dialogue, but it could seek a "new road" if the allies do not change their positions."It is too axiomatic that a constructive dialogue cannot ...

NATO gives Russia 5 weeks to destroy missiles violating INF Treaty

World
June 25 (UPI) -- NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday gave Russia five weeks to destroy ground-launched missiles that violate a treaty with the United States banning certain short- and intermediate-range missiles. He said NATO defense ministers plan to discuss Russia's development of the SSC-8 -- the 9M729 in Russia -- at a meeting Wednesday. "We call on Russia to take the responsible path. Unfortunately, we have seen no indication that Russia intends to do so," Stoltenberg said during remarks in Brussels. He said if Russia doesn't comply with the warning, NATO's response will be "defensive, measured and coordinated." He said NATO forces would not deploy land-based nuclear missiles in response. The missiles and their mobile launch systems have a range of 310 miles to 3,417...

May 24 (UPI) -- Raytheon Co. was awarded a $ 355.4 million contract to refurbish AGM-88B missiles for Qatar, Bahrain and Taiwan, the Defense Department announced. The firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract calls for AGM-88B High Speed Anti-Radiation Missiles [HARM] replacement exchange, the refurbishment of AGM-88B missiles and the conversion of AGM-88B into Captive Air Training Missiles [CATM-88B]. The HARM is a tactical, air-to-surface anti-radiation missile, capable of speeds up to twice the speed of sound. It is designed to home in on electronic transmissions coming from surface-to-air radar systems. It can, for example, detect, attack and destroy a radar antenna or transmitter by homing in on enemy radar emissions. In use since 1985, the missile is a part...
