‘They run off in a bad mood’: Merkel and Macron walk out amid EU splits over virus recovery deal

Marathon talks among EU leaders to agree an unprecedented £1.68tn budget and coronavirus recovery fund have been extended into a third day.The bitter negotiations have underscored the deep divides within the 27-nation bloc, with the traditional Franco-German alliance struggling to get its way. But European Council President Charles Michel urged the leaders to make one last push on "mission impossible".He reminded them that more than 600,000 people have died as a result of the coronavirus around the world, and it was up to them to stand together in the face of an unprecedented crisis."My hope is that we reach an agreement and that the headline... tomorrow is that the EU has accomplished mission impossible," Mr Michel said on Sunday night. ...

Coronavirus lockdown: Can nature help improve our mood?

At a time when so many of us are facing a heightened sense of threat as well as deep worries about our future, can nature lift our spirits?"Our current crisis has switched us out of normal existence and into survival mode," says Dr Anna Jorgensen, who researches the connection between environment and wellbeing at the University of Sheffield."We no longer see ourselves as quite so immortal," she says. With far more people unable to work, or working from home, many have been inspired to explore nature in their neighbourhood as they refocus on their immediate surroundings. As one Instagram user summed it up: "[It] takes a lockdown to find new paths from home. Escaped the 'office' to follow the River Trent winding through the floodplain at the bottom of our r...

Brain imaging may predict mood, attention disorders in children

Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Brain imaging may help identify children at risk for mood disorders as they grow up, a new study suggests. In findings published Thursday in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, researchers were essentially able to predict attention problems, as well as mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, in young grade school children using functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI. Although additional research is needed to confirm and expand upon these results, the authors told UPI their findings mean that brain imaging could one day be used as a screening tool for these disorders. "A child's brain and behavior change a fair amount over the years," said co-author Silvia Bunge, professor of developmental psychology at the University of California at Berkeley. "A minor issue, suc...

Exercise could boost mood, improve bipolar, study says

Health
Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A bump in exercise jump could lead to a jump in mood, one study says. Researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School and other scientists found that physical activity boosted the spirits of the people it studied -- especially the participants with bipolar disorder. "Systems regulating sleep, motor activity and mood have typically been studied independently. This work demonstrates the importance of examining these systems jointly rather than in isolation," Vadim Zipunnikov, an assistant professor in the Bloomberg School's Department of Biostatistics and study lead author, said in a news release. Their work followed 242 people between ages 15 and 84 who wore wrist trackers that plotted their real-time physical movement. Then, four times per day for two weeks, those res...

This was D Day, according to the head of the rescue operation. It was fighting talk ahead of what would be a "war against water".That battle of attrition against the elements had been waged continuously before the rescue started - heavy drainage pumps were the weapons reducing the water levels in many of the cavernous chambers. The monsoon weather did roll in as the dive teams set about their task.
