Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Guinness World Records oldest living man, who said the secret to a long life was smiling, has died at 112. Chitetsu Watanabe of Niigata, Japan died Sunday, Guinness World Records and the funeral home handling his services confirmed Tuesday. On Feb. 12, Guinness World Records presented him a certificate as the world's oldest living man at age of 112 years, 344 days. Watanabe said the secret to a long life was to "not get angry and keep a smile on your face." Japan's nationally circulated newspaper Mainichi reported that he died of old age. His eldest son's 81-year-old wife Yoko, said he became unable to eat after celebrating his Guinness World Record, and was put on intravenous drip. He also developed a fever and difficulty breathing a couple days before his death. Watan...

World’s oldest fossil trees uncovered in New York

Science
The earliest fossilised trees, dating back 386 million years, have been found at an abandoned quarry in New York.Scientists believe the forest they belonged to was so vast it originally stretched beyond Pennsylvania. This discovery in Cairo, New York, is thought to be two or three million years older than what was previously the world's oldest forest at Gilboa, also in New York State. The findings throw new light on the evolution of trees. What did they find?It was more than 10 years ago that experts from Cardiff University, UK, Binghamton University in the US and the New York State Museum began looking at the site in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains in the Hudson Valley.Since then, they have mapped over 3,000 square metres o...

World’s oldest figurative cave painting depicts ancient hunting scene

Science
Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Artistic expression is a vital part of the human story, and it's a story that began at least 44,000 years ago. The discovery of an ancient cave painting on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi has pushed the origins of figurative cave painting back further than ever before. The painting was first discovered by Hamrullah, an Indonesian spelunker and archaeologist, while working on a government survey in 2017. After noticing a hole in the ceiling at a cement plant where the survey was being conducted, Hamrullah clambered up a wall, through the opening and shimmied up a tunnel to discover a cave decorated in ancient pigments. The painting discovered by Hamrullah -- and since surveyed by an international team of archaeologists -- is described this week in a new paper published ...
Astronomers spot oldest galactic protocluster, a giant of the early universe

Astronomers spot oldest galactic protocluster, a giant of the early universe

Science
Sept. 27 (UPI) -- With the help of several powerful telescopes, an international team of astronomers has identified the earliest known protocluster. The protocluster, a constellation of 12 galaxies linked by gravity, formed some 13 billion years ago, when the universe was just 800 million years old. Scientists have described their discovery in a new paper, set to be published in the Astrophysical Journal on September 30. In the present universe, galactic clusters can grow to contain thousands of galaxies. Smaller galaxy clusters can organize to form superclusters, the largest structures in the cosmos. Models suggest there are 10 million superclusters in the observable universe. The protocluster candidate, z66OD, contains a protogalaxy called Himiko, a giant gas cloud and one of the larg...
New species of stegosaur is oldest ever found

New species of stegosaur is oldest ever found

Science
Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Researchers have discovered a new dinosaur -- a previously unknown type of stegosaur -- in the mountains of Morocco. Based on a few vertebrae and an upper arm bone, a team of researchers at London's Natural History Museum said Adratiklit boulahfa is the first stegosaur found in North Africa. The remains of the 186 million-year-old dinosaur, detailed in a paper published in the journal Gondwana Research, were found in the Middle Atlas Mountains in Morocco, an area that has not been studied for fossils very extensively, researchers said. "Despite being from the African continent, our phylogenetic analysis indicated that, surprisingly, Adratiklit is more closely related to European stegosaurs than it is to the two genera known from Southern Africa," Tom Raven, a doctoral st...
