
Coronavirus: Italy sees one-day death toll of nearly 800
March 21 (UPI) -- Italy again set a one-day death toll record from COVID-19, reporting another 793 deaths Saturday. Italy's Civil Protection Department said the country's overall coronavirus death toll reached 4,825, with 53,578 confirmed cases. Some 6,000 people have recovered from the disease. Most of the cases are centered in the Lombardy region -- 17,370. A strict nationwide lockdown, including restrictions on travel and closure of most stores, had been in place for 11 days in Italy, but the number of known coronavirus cases continued to rise about 15 percent every day, overwhelming hospitals.
