Queen agrees to close British Parliament; opponents outraged

Aug. 28 (UPI) -- British Queen Elizabeth II agreed Wednesday to shut down Parliament for five weeks at Prime Minister Boris Johnson's request, drawing backlash from lawmakers working to strike a deal with the European Union before Britain leaves in two months. Johnson asked the queen to temporarily suspend Parliament from early September to Oct. 14, saying the move will allow him to better pursue his domestic policies. Opponents say he's trying to ward off interference from lawmakers hoping to block an exit without an EU agreement. The government says it has released all prisoners from a list agreed upon during a 90-day window that ended this week. But the opposition says at least 84 people arrested after the initial agreem...

The study, titled “Extreme opponents of genetically modified foods know the least but think they know the most,” found that as a person’s opposition toward genetically modified (GM) foods became more extreme, their objective knowledge of the science and genetics dropped. Fernbach called the results “perverse,” but said they were “consistent with previous research on the psychology of extremism.” GM foods are f...
