Astronomers detect comets outside the Milky Way

Science
Oct. 27 (UPI) -- An international team of researchers has identified six extra-galactic comets, or exocomets, outside the Milky Way. The discovery was assisted by amateur astronomers. The distant ice balls, roughly the size of Halley's Comet, were spotted orbiting a small star 800 light-years from Earth. They were documented using transit photometry -- the first time the technique has been used to identify comets.Transit photometry describes the measurement of light dimming as objects pass across the face of a luminous object, like a star. The dimming can reveal the presence of planets and other orbital objects. In recent years, the improved precision of astronomical instruments has allowed scientists to measure even the slightest dimming of distant stars. The six comets -- detailed this wee...

The forgotten quake victims outside Mexico City

World
Just how much damage the Mexico earthquake has caused is still impossible to gauge because proper analysis of affected regions outside Mexico City has yet to be carried out.One hundred miles south of the capital lies the Jojutla, the largest town near the epicentre of the quake. Most of its old downtown is either destroyed or will be bulldozed, almost all shops have been destroyed or will be, over half the population is now homeless. It is a proper disaster. The locals are claiming the government is ignoring them and focusing everything on Mexico City.So far, they say, almost no government aid has been delivered; they are almost totally dependent on donations from aid organisations and civil society.Video:Search continues for survivors trapped in rubble In searing hot weather we came across ...

NASA TV to broadcast six-hour space walk outside ISS

Science
Aug. 11 (UPI) -- NASA's own TV channel is scheduled to broadcast a six-hour spacewalk outside the International Space Station. The walk will take place on August 17, and coverage will begin at 10 a.m. EDT.The spacewalk will be carried out by a pair Russian cosmonauts, Expedition 52 Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Sergey Ryazanskiy. While outside the space station, the duo will manually launch five nanosatellites, each with a different purpose -- not all of them scientific. One of the miniature satellites is encased in paneling created by 3D printers. The cubed satellite will help researchers test the effects of low-Earth orbit on 3D printed materials.Another mini satellite is being launched in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Sputnik 1 launch, the world's first a...
