Aug. 23 (UPI) -- The COVID-19 pandemic may be the deadliest viral outbreak since the Spanish flu in 1918-19, but these events may not be as rare as previously thought, according to an analysis published Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The assessment of new disease outbreaks over the past 400 years found that the probability of a pandemic with similar impact to COVID-19 in a given year is about 2%, the data showed. This means that a person born in 2000 had about a 38% chance of experiencing a major outbreak by now, the researchers said. That probability is only growing, highlighting the need to adjust perceptions of pandemic risks and expectations for preparedness, they said. "The most important takeaway [of our study] is that large pandemics lik...

Study: Telehealth consults with surgeons rose during pandemic’s first wave

March 26 (UPI) -- Nearly 40% of new surgical patient consultations in Michigan were conducted via telehealth at the height of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020, an analysis published Friday by JAMA Surgery found. Just under 17% of new patient visits to surgeons statewide between March 8 and June 6 of last year were completed using telehealth, the data showed. From June 7 through Sept. 5, that figure fell to 3%, the researchers said. Advertisement The findings suggest an increased use of telehealth among surgeons, a specialty not traditionally associated with the approach, during the pandemic, researchers said. "Telehealth is a viable way for patients to access surgical care," study co-author Dr. Grace Chao told UPI in an email. "We show ... that telehealth was success...

COVID-19 pandemic’s economic shock hit less-developed countries hardest

Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Few nations have escaped the economic downturn brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, but new research suggests low- and middle-income countries have been hit the hardest, suffering sharper declines in standard of living and food security. To account for the scope of economic shockwaves triggered by the pandemic, researchers conducted several thousand phone surveys in Burkina Faso, Colombia, Ghana, Kenya, Nepal, Philippines, Rwanda and Sierra Leone, amassing large amounts of data on job and income losses. Advertisement The data -- detailed Friday in the journal Science Advances -- suggests the socioeconomic drop-off in less-developed countries has been especially harsh, resulting in higher levels of food insecurity. Many of the surveyed households said they were struggling t...

UN health chief: World can start dreaming of pandemic’s end

UNITED NATIONS -- The U.N. health chief declared Friday that positive results from coronavirus vaccine trials mean the world “can begin to dream about the end of the pandemic,” but he said rich and powerful nations must not trample the poor and marginalized “in the stampede for vaccines.”In an address to the U.N. General Assembly’s first high-level session on the pandemic, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus cautioned that while the virus can be stopped, “the path ahead remains treacherous.”The pandemic has shown humanity at “its best and worst,” he said, pointing to “inspiring acts of compassion and self-sacrifice, breathtaking feats of science and innovation, and heartwarming demonstrations of solidarity, but also disturbing signs of self-interest, blame...
