The Panthers posted a 102-120 record in 14 seasons under Hurney. His contact was set to expire in June. Hurney served as the Panthers' general manager over two separate tenures. The coach said it "tightened up" in Wednesday's practice. Advertisement "We'll get him treatment and see if we can get him better," Rhule said. "I know how badly Christian wants to play. I know how badly Christian wants to help the Panthers win. I feel bad for him just like I would anybody if they're banged up." Carolina Panthers place DT Kawann Short on season-ending IR

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said in a statement that Short will undergo surgery and won't return this season. "KK has done everything he could possibly do to try to play these past two games," Hurney said, "but we have made the decision that it is in the best long-term interest of KK and the team that he undergo surgery to fix his shoulder and focus on his rehab and get ready for next season." In Short's absence, former first-round pick Vernon Butler, who was inactive for the first two games of the season, is exp...

Panthers sign RB Elijah Holyfield, boxing legend’s son

Sports
April 29 (UPI) -- The Carolina Panthers added some punch to their backfield Monday by signing undrafted rookie free agent Elijah Holyfield. Holyfield's name wasn't called during the 2019 NFL Draft. He is the son of four-time heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield. The former Georgia running back had 1,018 yards and seven scores on 159 carries during his junior season for the Bulldogs. The Panthers also signed Utah safety Corrion Ballard, Nichols State wide receiver Damion Jeanpiere Jr. and California linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk. Holyfield ran an underwhelming 4.78-second 40-yard dash at the 2019 NFL scouting combine. He also did 26 reps on the bench press, had a vertical jump of 29.5 inches and a broad jump of 118 inches. The 5-foot-10, 217-pound running back projects as an NFL bac...

Colin Kaepernick linked to Patriots, Panthers

Sports
Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Colin Kaepernick's attorney thinks his client will sign with an NFL team within the next two weeks. Mark Geragos told CNN on Saturday that he would not be surprised if Kaepernick signed with the New England Patriots. He also said he would not be surprised if Patriots owner Robert Kraft's former coach made a move. He could have been referring to several coaches with the latter statement, including Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll. "I'm going to make a bold prediction, although I've been wrong once before on this ... one of three teams picks him [Kaepernick] up," Geragos said. Geragos said the Panthers would be a "natural" pick if quarterback Cam Newton misses time in 2019 due to shoulder issues. Newton had shoulder surgery in January. "He absolutely wants to play [in t...
