Data from Parker Solar Probe helps unravel sun’s mysteries

Science
Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Over the last year, NASA's Parker Solar Probe flew closer to the sun than any previous spacecraft. Now, scientists are beginning to make sense of the measurements captured by the probe's four instruments during its first three record-setting flybys. On Wednesday, researchers published four new scientific papers, all supported by Parker Solar Probe data, in the journal Nature. According to the authors of the new studies, the observations and measurements recorded by the Parker Solar Probe are bringing scientists closer to solving some of the sun's greatest mysteries -- like explaining why the corona is a couple million degrees hotter than the sun's surface, where solar flares come from and what propels solar wind. "Some of the data confirmed what we already thought, but so...

‘Take away points’ – Paul Parker calls for strong action after racist abuse hurled at England players in Montenegro

Sports
Paul Parker has urged UEFA to hit the Montenegro FA where it hurts after England players were subjected to racist abuse during their 5-1 victory in Podgorica on Monday night. The Three Lions wrapped up their second Euro 2020 qualifying win in fine style, but sadly we are not talking about the football the morning after the match. Instead, the focus has been on the racist chanting aimed at England’s black players throughout the clash. Danny Rose was subjected to racist abuse when he was booked towards the end of the 5-1 win There were suggestions of some issues early in the game, but it was clear in the closing stages as monkey chants were aimed at Danny Rose following a late tackle which earned him a yellow card. Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling celebrated his fourth...

Parker Solar Probe: Nasa's Sun mission smashes records

Science
America's audacious mission to "touch the Sun" has now got nearer to our star than any previous human-made object. The Parker Solar Probe passed the current record of 42.73 million km (26.55 million miles) from the Sun's surface on Monday. The previous record was set by the German-US Helios 2 satellite back in April 1976. That mission also set the all time speed record of close to 70km/s (43 miles/s). Parker will smash this, too.The expectation is that it will eventually reach peak speeds around 190km/s (690,000km/h; 428,700mph).Parker was launched from Earth in August. It's on a trajectory that will take it inside the Sun's outer atmosphere, or corona.Information from this region promises to crack longstanding mysteries about our ...

Parker Solar Probe heads toward sun after morning liftoff

Science
Aug. 12 (UPI) -- The Parker Solar Probe's second launch attempt in a mission to touch the sun was successful early Sunday. At 3:31 a.m. EDT, a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket lifted off from Space Launch Complex 37 at Florida's Kennedy Space Center, part of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The engines were blazing golden in the clear night sky during ascent. "It was a very quiet launch countdown, it went off like clockwork," NASA Launch Director Omar Baez said. "Parker Solar Probe has been one of our most challenging missions to date." About four minutes into flight, the Delta IV port and starboard booster engines shut down and separated from the second stage. After second stage engine ignition, the payload fairing also was jettisoned. The second stage main engine cut o...
