New York Rangers’ Chris Kreider fractures foot vs. Philadelphia Flyers

Feb. 28 (UPI) -- New York Rangers veteran forward Chris Kreider suffered a fractured foot in the first period of Friday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Kreider sustained the foot injury while blocking a shot by Flyers defenseman Philippe Myers in the opening frame. Shortly later, the team announced Kreider would not return to the game. Through 62 games this season, Kreider has recorded 24 goals and 21 assists. He ranks third on the Rangers in goals this season, and he was on pace to top his career high of 28 goals. Kreider was among the top names available at Monday's NHL trade deadline, but the Rangers eventually re-signed the forward to a seven-year, $ 45.5 million contract extension. According to Spotrac, the deal has an average annual value of $ 6.5 million. The Flyers beat t...

Elevated levels of PFAS found in water in Miami, New York, Philadelphia, other major cities

Science
Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A new study of tap water samples across the United States has revealed PFAS compounds, human-made chemicals linked with a variety of health problems, to be more prevalent than earlier surveys. The new study, organized by the Environmental Working Group, involved the testing of tap water samples from 44 locations in 31 states. "We found PFAS in all but one sample, which is pretty incredible," Sydney Evans, science analyst with EWG, told UPI. Tests revealed elevated levels of PFAS in dozens of American cities, including Miami, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, are a class of synthetic compounds used in a variety of industrial processes and found in dozens of household items. The newest research suggests these chemica...

Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz ruled out vs. New York Giants

Sports
Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz was ruled out for Sunday's regular-season finale against the New York Giants with back and rib injuries, the team announced Friday. League sources told ESPN and NFL Media that Ertz sustained a fractured rib in last week's game against the Dallas Cowboys. According to the team's official injury report, the veteran pass-catcher failed to practice this week and was later ruled out. Ertz suffered the rib injury after he took a hard hit from Cowboys safety Xavier Woods in the first quarter Sunday. He entered the locker room but returned to finish the game, recording four catches for 28 yards against Dallas. "Medically, I want to make sure he's 100 percent," Eagles head coach Doug Pederson told reporters Friday. "Zach is a tough guy. I k...

Zack Wheeler, Philadelphia Phillies agree to five-year, $118M deal

Sports
Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Right-hander Zack Wheeler, one of the prized free-agent starting pitchers this off-season, will join the Philadelphia Phillies after agreeing to a long-term contract. League sources told ESPN and MLB Media on Wednesday that Wheeler agreed to a five-year, $ 118 million deal with the Phillies. According to ESPN, the 29-year-old pitcher rejected a larger contract offer from the Chicago White Sox worth more than $ 120 million before reaching an agreement with Philadelphia. Wheeler was regarded as the top free-agent starter outside of Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg, both who will command massive contracts in free agency. The Phillies, under new manager Joe Girardi, needed help in their rotation, especially with Jake Arrieta entering the final season of his contract with the...

Philadelphia Eagles OT Lane Johnson ruled out vs. Seattle Seahawks

Sports
Nov. 22 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Eagles will play the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday without Pro Bowl offensive tackle Lane Johnson. Johnson, who remains in the NFL's concussion protocol, was ruled out for the pivotal NFC showdown, according to the Eagles' official injury report. He exited last week's 17-10 loss to the New England Patriots with the head injury. The Eagles replaced Johnson with veteran swing tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai against the Patriots, but could take a different approach in their next matchup. Rookie tackle Andre Dillard has been practicing on the right side of the offensive line in each practice this week to prepare for the Seahawks' defense. Philadelphia selected Dillard in the first round (No. 22 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Washington State. He replaced Al...
