Zack Wheeler, Philadelphia Phillies agree to five-year, $118M deal

Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Right-hander Zack Wheeler, one of the prized free-agent starting pitchers this off-season, will join the Philadelphia Phillies after agreeing to a long-term contract. League sources told ESPN and MLB Media on Wednesday that Wheeler agreed to a five-year, $ 118 million deal with the Phillies. According to ESPN, the 29-year-old pitcher rejected a larger contract offer from the Chicago White Sox worth more than $ 120 million before reaching an agreement with Philadelphia. Wheeler was regarded as the top free-agent starter outside of Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg, both who will command massive contracts in free agency. The Phillies, under new manager Joe Girardi, needed help in their rotation, especially with Jake Arrieta entering the final season of his contract with the...

Phillies place Vince Velasquez on injured list with right forearm strain

Sports
May 12 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Phillies have placed starting pitcher Vince Velasquez on the 10-day injured list with a right forearm strain. Velasquez, 26, is 1-2 with a 3.87 ERA in seven games (six starts) this season. He has struck out 32 hitters in 30.1 innings. A timetable for his return has not been announced. "This is precautionary, from my standpoint," Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said. "He threw his bullpen at like 90 percent. I stood in for it. ... We just felt like he made all his starts last year and has been very durable for us since I've been here. It made sense to just be a little conservative on this one." Philadelphia started rookie southpaw Cole Irvin Sunday afternoon in Velasquez's place. Irvin allowed one run and five hits in seven innings as the Phillies beat the Ro...

Struggling Nick Pivetta gets start for Phillies vs. Giants

Nick Pivetta's promising start to the 2018 season has been derailed in his last two starts. The right-hander will try to get back on track Wednesday as the Philadelphia Phillies host the San Francisco Giants for a 7:05 p.m. ET start at Citizens Bank Park. Pivetta's ERA has gone up by more than two runs in his last pair of starts. His latest outing was the shortest of his professional career. Pivetta (1-2, 4.76 ERA) allowed six runs on five hits and three walks in only one inning against the Washington Nationals last Friday. Pivetta gave up two home runs in the start and needed 46 pitches to get three outs. "I just look at this as a bad day at work," Pivetta told MLB.com after the Phillies' 7-3 loss. "That's what happened. It wasn't a good day. It wasn't my best. ... I'm going to be fine. I...
