Pittsburgh Steelers TE Vance McDonald sidelined by foot injury

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Vance McDonald sidelined by foot injury

Sports
Pittsburgh Steelers starting tight end Vance McDonald did not practice Thursday, the club announced. McDonald was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, but his inability to take the field Thursday puts in jeopardy his chances of playing in Sunday's regular-season opener at the Cleveland Browns. Entering his sixth NFL season overall and second with Pittsburgh, McDonald had 14 receptions for 188 yards and a touchdown in 10 games (seven starts) last season. If McDonald is unable to play Sunday, veteran tight end Jesse James is expected to start in his place. James started 14 games last season and established career highs with 43 receptions for 372 yards and three touchdowns. A fifth-round draft pick out of Penn State in 2015, the 6-foot-7, 261-pound James had 39 catches for 33...

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell might report next Monday

Sports
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell has not appeared at practice yet, but he hinted when he will arrive. Bell has told some of his teammates that he will report on Monday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. That means Bell would get back to work on Labor Day. Bell has not yet signed his tender, and the deadline to sign a multiyear deal passed in July. Monday would be the first day of practice of the week leading up to the Steelers' regular-season opener against the Cleveland Browns. Last year, Bell reported six days ahead of the team's first regular-season game, so it appears he will follow the same schedule this year. He arrived a few days before his first practice in 2017 to take a physical, and it is unclear whether he will do that again this time. The Steelers ...

Oakland Raiders trading WR Ryan Switzer to Pittsburgh Steelers

Sports
The Oakland Raiders are finalizing a trade that will send wide receiver Ryan Switzer to the Pittsburgh Steelers, multiple media outlets reported Monday. Pittsburgh also will acquire a 2019 sixth-round pick from the Raiders, while Oakland will receive a fifth-round pick in next year's draft. Switzer had six catches for 41 yards with the Dallas Cowboys last year as a rookie. He also returned 29 punts for 256 yards and a touchdown. Switzer was traded from the Cowboys to the Raiders in exchange for defensive lineman Jihad Ward in April. Now, Switzer will be traded for the second time in five months. Since being acquired by the Raiders, Oakland has obtained wide receivers Martavis Bryant and Jordy Nelson. Switzer was also trying to make the Raiders' roster as a punt returner, but he retu...

Pittsburgh Steelers thin at tight end after Jesse James injury

Sports
Pittsburgh is thin at the tight end position and could very well be hanging up a "help wanted" sign after seeing Jesse James go down in Saturday night's 16-6 win over the Tennessee Titans. James suffered a contusion to his back, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said after the game. "I don't know the severity. ... We'll give you an appropriate update when we get it," Tomlin said of James' injury. James was injured while leaping to catch a pass from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in the second quarter. "I was most disappointed throwing to him," Roethlisberger told reporters after the game. "We've had some good connections in the past. That's on me. He was in the right spots. I was sailing [the football] a little bit. ... I hate that he got hit because of a pass I threw tonight." The St...
