March 29 (UPI) -- University of Albany lacrosse player Matt Perla scored a goal from 53 yards out in a 14-6 win against Harvard.The No. 1 ranked Great Danes took on the No. 19 Crimson Wednesday at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium in Albany, N.Y. UAlbany had a 9-4 lead entering the final quarter.In the final frame, the Great Danes got goals from five different scorers.Perla's shot came after a face-off win. He caught the ball at the 30-yard line before sprinting up seven yards. He then heaved a shot over the midfield line, toward the Crimson's net.His shot went over the head of a leaping Robert Shaw to increase the Great Danes' lead. March 10 (UPI) -- Northern Colorado junior Jordan Davis threw down a humongous slam dunk against Montana in the Big Sky Tournament.Davis showed off his hops Friday in the Bears' 91-89 loss to the Grizzlies at the Reno Events Center in Nevada.The Bears and Grizzlies were tied 74-74 with 2:16 remaining in the contest when he took flight. Davis dribbled toward the 3-point line before deciding to sprint into the paint. He jumped up, straight into Grizzlies big man Fabijan Krslovic. Davis disregarded the 6-foot-8, 239-pound forward, throwing down a crazy one-handed slam."JD is just a crazy athlete and that play gave us a spark. Nov. 16 (UPI) -- For the first time, research has confirmed that scientists successfully detected chronic traumatic encephalopathy -- known commonly as CTE -- in a living former professional football player.Scientists detected signs of the dementia-like disease in former player Fred McNeill four years ago, but it's not possible to confirm CTE until after a patient's death. McNeill died in 2015, and confirmation he had the disease was made last week in the journal Neurosurgery, scientists said Wednesday."The importance of this one today is that this is the first time to have a scan which shows brain degeneration of CTE in a living person and then to have that person die and it correlates with the autopsy," Dr. Julian Bailes, a neurosurgeon at NorthShore University in Illinois, said.Research...

Garbine Muguruza, who won Wimbledon in July for the first time in her career, was named WTA Singles Player of the Year on Friday. The 24-year-old Muguruza rose to world No. 1 for the first time in her career in September and is currently ranked second. She also won the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati and reached the semifinals on five other occasions. Muguruza is one of eight players who qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore, which begin Sunday.
