Mike Horn and Boerge Ousland: North Pole explorers complete epic trek

Science
Two explorers who trekked hundreds of miles at the North Pole and were running out of food have reached safety after an epic journey across the ice.South African Mike Horn and Norwegian Boerge Ousland covered about 1,800km (1,120 miles) on treacherous drifting ice in the past couple of months.Because of delays, they had been expected to run out of food by Friday. However, they managed to meet up with two Norwegians sent to rescue them despite a local storm. The latest Instagram update on Sunday showed a picture of the four men on their way to the Norwegian polar research ship, the Lance, which was due to pick them up. An earlier entry described how the two pairs had got closer and closer to each ot...

NASA: Water-hunting rover to land on lunar south pole in 2022

Science
Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Before the first woman and next man land on the moon, NASA will send another rover to the lunar surface, this time to the satellite's south pole. The Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover, or VIPER, will be designed to hunt for water on the lunar south pole. Planetary scientists are confident there is water ice on both the moon's poles, perhaps in the millions of tons. Still, scientists aren't certain about the exact whereabouts and nature of the moon's water reserves. VIPER could help NASA scientists develop more detailed resource maps as they prepare for send humans to the moon for the first time in decades. "The key to living on the Moon is water -- the same as here on Earth," Daniel Andrews, the project manager of the VIPER mission and director of engineeri...
Indian lander goes silent as it approaches lunar south pole

Indian lander goes silent as it approaches lunar south pole

Science
Sept. 6 (UPI) -- India's attempt to become the first nation to put a spacecraft on the south pole of the moon is on hold. The country's lunar lander Vikram stopped relaying signals just moments before it was scheduled to touch down on the lunar surface. The lander performed a series of breaking maneuvers on Friday, first so-called rough breaking, followed by fine breaking. The touchdown was expected sometime around 4:30 p.m. EDT. On live broadcasts of the landing attempt, officials with the country's space agency, the Indian Space Research Organization, looked on with concern. Silence filled mission control. ISRO Chairman K. Sivan said the agency needed to analyze data to determine what happened to the lander prior to touchdown. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on hand at mission contro...
Gravity data details Ceres wandering pole

Gravity data details Ceres wandering pole

Science
Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Ceres, the solar system's innermost dwarf planet, features a wandering pole, new research confirms. Using gravity data collected by NASA's Dawn mission, researchers at the Planetary Science Institute were able to map density variations in Ceres crust, revealing topographical anomalies best explained by a polar reorientation. "The topography shows the remnants of an equatorial ridge compatible with the position of the paleo-equator," researchers wrote in a paper published this week in the journal Nature Geoscience. The axis around which a planetary body spins affects the density of the body's outer layers, including the crust. When the axis shifts and poles reorient themselves, crustal or topographical anomalies can emerge. On Ceres, scientists found evidence of a former e...

Chanje Kunda: The poet using pole dancing to explain particle physics

Entertainment
Poetry, pole dancing and particle physics don't often meet. But they do in a new theatre show by a performer who wants to reclaim the way the female body is portrayed.Poet, playwright and performance artist Chanje Kunda took lessons in several forms of dance to prepare for her latest one-woman show Superposition - ballet dancing, contemporary dancing, pole dancing and lap dancing. The latter two are normally performed in certain clubs for certain men, but Kunda is reinventing them for her own positive purpose."I wanted to explore female sensuality and eroticism because female sensuality within the media has been commodified and cheapened and exploited, and I wanted to try and find new ways as a feminist to be able to celebrate that," she says.It was her movement director who suggested she h...
