Is It Really That Bad to Eat Non-Organic Produce?

Health
Are non-organic fruits and veggies really so bad? Here's what Health's contributing medical editor thinks. Yes, they are bad, but it’s way more important to include a wide variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet than to avoid them because of pesticide concerns. Here’s a tip: If you thoroughly wash your produce with cold water and throw away the outer leaves of leafy vegetables (like romaine), you will remove most of the pesticide residue. If you’re still worried about ingesting chemicals, buy organic varieties of the produce on the Environmental Working Group’s “Dirty Dozen” list, which highlights the conventionally grown foods that tend to have the most pesticide contam...

5 Fresh Foods to Always Pick Up in the Produce Aisle

Health
The produce aisle can be a little overwhelming. You’ve got your super-fresh stuff, your local stuff, your organic stuff, your what-the-heck-is-that stuff. Maybe you have a baby in the cart, or a kid tugging on your hand to get to the cereal aisle as fast as humanly possible. Perhaps you have a short, tight list because you do most of your produce shopping at the farmer’s market or you’re in a CSA—a particularly smart move this time of year. Regardless of your supermarket strategy, there are five fresh foods I suggest you always pick up from this aisle. Nowadays, as a cook who makes Thai and Indian recipes as frequently as she does Italian ones, I find that I need these the most frequently, and curse myself when I do not have them. ...

Hubble, Gaia produce most precise measure of universe's expansion rate

Science
July 12 (UPI) -- By combining the observations of the two most powerful space telescopes in orbit, scientists have achieved the most precise measurement of the Hubble constant, the universe's expansion rate. The new measurement confirms the tension between explosion rate in the early and late universe, researchers report. Astronomers can measure the expansion of the universe by measuring a galaxy's redshift, a change in the wavelength of the light due to a change in the velocity of the object. By measuring the redshift of galaxies using the Hubble Telescope, scientists have established the Hubble constant. But investigations of the cosmic microwave background, the oldest radiation in the universe, can also be used to predict the universe's expansion rate. Maps of the microwave signature ...

Astronomers produce detailed maps of star-forming region in Orion A

Science
May 18 (UPI) -- Newly published maps, produced by a research team led by Yale astronomers, has revealed the Orion A molecular cloud in unprecedented detail. Located 1,350 light-years from Earth, the Orion A molecular cloud is the closest star-forming region of massive stars. Found within Orion A are regions similar to the star-birthing environs that produced our sun. "Our maps probe a wide range of physical scales needed to study how stars form in molecular clouds, and how young stars impact their parent cloud," Yale postdoctoral associate Shuo Kong said in a news release. The maps were compiled using observations collected by a single-dish telescope and an interferometer as part of the CARMA-NRO Orion Survey. "Our survey is a unique combination of data from two very different telescopes...

Boeing to produce Super Hornets, Growlers for Navy

Business
April 6 (UPI) -- Boeing was awarded a contract from the U.S. Navy for services in support of F/A-18E Super Hornets and the EA-18G Growler. The deal, announced Thursday by the Department of Defense, is valued at more than $ 54.3 million under the terms of a modified fixed-price-incentive-firm contract that was previously awarded. The agreement enables Boeing to manufacture and produce 38 F/A-18E Super Hornets and 21 EA-18G Growlers aircraft for the Navy.Work on the contract will occur in various location across the United States. The Defense Department said that it would be using expired funds to fund the contract deal, which is allowed under Pentagon financial management regulation. The expired funds will be allocated and obligated to Boeing from Navy fiscal 2013 and 2014 aircraft procurement ...
