Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Raytheon said Tuesday it will work to enhance the U.S. Army's hypersonic weapon glide body, days after Dynetics was awarded a contract to build at least 20 common missile bodies. The U.S. Army is leading a team with the U.S. Navy and Air Force to deliver hypersonic weapon combat capability to soldiers by 2023. The hypersonic weapons launched from land, sea or air will travel at speeds greater than Mach 5, which is five times the speed of sound, a company statement said. Raytheon "will build and deliver the control, actuation and power-conditioning subassemblies that control flight of the U.S. Army's new Common Hypersonic Glide Body program," the statement said. Dec. 24 (UPI) -- The Mount Etna volcano, the highest in activity in Europe and one of the most active in the world, woke up Monday morning producing intense seismic activity and producing a cloud of ash visible from several miles away. The activity started at 8:50 a.m. local time and just in the first three hours there were nearly 130 earthquakes, according to a statement from the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology. The earthquakes were accompanied by the emission of a dark cloud of ash, it added. Authorities have issued a yellow alert but are monitoring the activity, Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera reported. Dec. 15 (UPI) -- Northrop Grumman reports it is to produce its digital radar warning system and electronic warfare management system for U.S. Air Force and Navy aircrews.Production of the AN/APR-39D(V)2 comes under a $ 124.7 million award following a period of development and testing. Northrop, however, did not specify the contract's issuing authority."With the AN/APR-39D(V)2, we are bringing mature, fifth-generation digital technology to the rotary fleet," Robert Fleming, vice president for the land & avionics C4ISR division of Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, said in a press release.
