Human influence has reduced chances of record-breaking cold in China

Science
Dec. 26 (UPI) -- A study has found that human influences have decreased the likelihood of an extreme cold event like the one that took place in China in January 2016.The study -- published in the Bulletin of American Meteorological Society -- sought to determine how human influences have affected the likelihood of a strong cold surge like the one that broke daily minimum temperature records from Jan. 21-25, 2016.The surge caused temperatures to drop by between 50 degrees and 64 degrees, resulting in the lowest temperature recorded since modern meteorological observations started in 1960 amid a warming winter trend in 2015 and 2016.Researchers from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Meteorological Bureau, Met Office Hadley Centre of U.K., University of ...

Record-breaking cable car opens in Germany

World
Dec. 21 (UPI) -- After more than two years of work on Germany's highest construction site, a world record-breaking cableway in the Bavarian Alps is set to open Friday. The cable car on the country's tallest mountain, Zugspitze, is located near the Armed Forces Recreation Center Edelweiss Lodge and Resort. The gondola breaks three records for any hanging cable car system -- the tallest steel tower, the longest cableway span and the highest elevation difference. The $ 59 million cableway was difficult to build with the main challenges being high altitude and removing ice and snow from equipment.Out of the thousands of service members and families who go skiing on the German Alps each year, roughly one-third head to the Zugspitze, which claims to have the best views in Germany.Aside from the vi...

Record-breaking summer for renewable power

Technology
Supplies of renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, in the UK have outstripped fossil fuels this summer. On 26 May, solar panels produced more than a quarter of all electricity needed in the country, with windy and bright conditions helping renewable energy generation to smash records. And for the first time on 7 June, wind, nuclear and solar were all generating more than gas and coal combined. The falling cost of wind and solar technology makes it increasingly attractive and energy firms have installed tens of thousands of solar panels in recent years. The home roof market has also boomed with an estimated 900,000 systems now online, despite generous government subsidies all but drying up in the last two years.Image:Wind and solar power are quickly growing in popularityDunsfold Aerodr...
